A Custom Coloured Glass Balustrade With Over 200 RAL Colours

Alu Color is a bespoke coloured glass balustrade system that lets you customise every visible component – from the posts and handrails to the clamps and even the glass tone itself. Choose from over 200 RAL colours to create a fully colour-matched balustrade that complements your home, terrace or commercial space.

Designed for visual harmony and structural safety, Alu Color is ideal for modern balconies, decking areas, staircases and more. Whether you’re aligning with architectural finishes or adding branded colours to a public space, this coloured glass balustrade offers full creative control.

Coloured Glass Balustrade – Match Every Detail

Unlike standard aluminium and glass railings, Alu Color allows you to coordinate every visible element:

  • Powder-coated aluminium posts in your exact RAL shade
  • Handrails in aluminium, oak or jatoba – coloured or natural
  • Clamps and fixings painted to match for a seamless finish
  • Tinted laminated glass, colour film approximated to RAL values*

Whether you prefer a unified colour scheme or bold contrasts, the result is a coloured aluminium railing system that’s tailored to your style.

*Note: Glass tinting is approximate and based on transmittance and D65 light source values. Final appearance may vary slightly.

FAQs – Aluminium and Glass Balustrades

  • How do I know the final look?

Use our design tool to see a full 3D rendering of your chosen colours and layout before you place the order.

  • What’s included in the kit?

Everything you need: posts, clamps, handrail (if chosen), glass panels, fixings, tools and instructions tailored to your configuration.

  • Can I choose a handrail-free version?

Yes – this is often preferred for a minimalistic look, especially on balconies or terraces.

  • Does the powder coating last outdoors?

Yes – powder-coated aluminium is highly durable and weather-resistant. It retains its colour well over time.

  • Is this balustrade CE marked?

Yes. Alu Color is manufactured and tested under EN 1090-1:2009 + A1:2011.

  • How close is the glass colour match to RAL?

Glass tints are created by laminating films, approximating the RAL shade under natural daylight (D65). The result is very close, but slight variation may occur.

  • What parts can be colour-matched?

Posts, clamps, handrails and even the glass tone can be tailored to your chosen RAL shade.

  • Can I match the balustrade to my door/window colour?

Yes. We use the RAL system, which is the industry standard for doors, windows, facades and cladding. You can select any RAL code.

Inspiration

From bold statement railings to subtle tone-on-tone integrations, Alu Color is used across the UK in balconies, stairs and garden terraces. Match your home's style or stand out with a bespoke colour finish – the choice is yours.

Technical information

What you need to know about Alu Color

Different appearance depending on the side of the glass

Your selected RAL colour is matched to a colour code provided by the glass supplier. The colour is achieved by combining up to four plastic films in different base colours, which may result in a slight variation in appearance depending on which side of the glass you are viewing. For this reason, we mark each glass panel according to which sides match – make sure to install all marked sides facing the same direction.

Colour choice affects transparency

The transparency of the glass depends on your chosen RAL colour. Lighter colours generally result in more transparent glass, while darker shades reduce transparency.
The exception is white RAL shades, which come with a frosted interlayer film for a more opaque effect.

Consistent colour across all components

All aluminium components are powder-coated in your selected colour. Some smaller components are made of plastic and painted differently, which may result in a slightly glossier or more matte finish compared to the aluminium parts.

Technical details

Posts

Posts are powder-coated in the RAL colour of your choice. Please note that actual colours may differ slightly from how they appear on a screen.

Clamps

Clamps are powder-coated to match the RAL colour of your choice. Please note that actual colours may differ slightly from how they appear on a screen.

Glass

Glass is tinted using film layers designed to approximate the RAL colour of your choice as closely as possible. The values are based on transmittance and a 10-degree observation angle using light source D65. Perceived colour may vary slightly in real-life conditions.

Handrail

Handrails are powder-coated in the RAL colour of your choice. Please note that actual colours may differ slightly from how they appear on a screen.

CE-Marked Posts

The posts have been tested for top-down and lateral attachment to wooden base, and can withstand loads of 0.5-1.0 kN/m.

Square 50×50 mm

Square aluminium posts and handrails with cross-sections measuring 50×50 mm.

Surface Layer 20 µm

Our aluminium profiles are anodised for enhanced durability—similar to the process used for sailboat masts, offering high resistance to wind and weather exposure.

Square 50×50 mm

Aluminium handrails with square dimensions of 50×50 mm.

Wooden Handrail

Crafted from untreated light oak or jatoba, a dense hardwood with qualities and appearance similar to teak.

Corners

For installations with corners, the wooden handrail is manually mitred to ensure a precise fit. Both the wood and aluminium versions can be cut using a standard mitre saw. If you opt for an aluminium handrail and have a 90° corner, no cutting is required.

8.76 mm Laminated Glass

Composed of two 4 mm float glass panes bonded with a plastic interlayer. In case of breakage, the interlayer keeps the glass intact. All edges are ground and polished.

8,76 mm Toughened Laminated Glass

Same construction as our standard laminated glass, but with two tempered glass panes instead of one. We recommend this glass for environments in which the barrier may be exposed to repeated external stress. Comes with ground and polished edges.

Colour

Clamps are colour-matched to the rest of the balustrade system.

Clamps in Zinc or Stainless Steel

Choose between powder-coated zinc (colour-matched to your railing) or acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316) clamps.

Powder-coated Aluminium Parts

Posts and other aluminium elements require occasional cleaning. Use mild detergent, water and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive, acidic, or alkaline cleaners. Avoid sharp impacts that may damage the coating and allow moisture intrusion.

Glass

Clean with a soft cloth and window or mirror cleaning solution. For stubborn stains, rubbing alcohol may be used prior to regular cleaning. Avoid abrasive agents.

Wooden Handrail

For outdoor use, we recommend cleaning and sanding the wood with fine sandpaper. Apply a protective treatment such as wood oil, depending on the weather. Indoor installations only require light cleaning and sanding. Oak naturally contains tannic acid, which helps resist decay. When exposed to moisture, this acid may leach and cause discolouration on surfaces below. To minimise this, we recommend oiling the wood or pre-treating with oxalic acid during installation. Oxalic acid can also be used to remove any resulting stains. Always consult a paint specialist before using oxalic acid. For ongoing care, re-oil the handrail a few times per year.

Symmetrical Sections

When using our configurator, enter the outer dimensions of the installation area. The configurator automatically adjusts the measurements so that each section on each side is of equal length. We customise the railing to fit your measurements — not the other way around.

Customisable Railing Height

In the configurator, you can select a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm, measured from the ground to the top of the handrail.

Millimetre Perfect

When you enter your measurements, we ask you to do so in millimetres. We create your railing to the millimetre, so that it’s a perfect fit for where you want to place it.

Everything is Included with Your Order

Your delivery includes everything you need for installation: posts, glass, handrails, screws, drill bits and any special tools required. You only need a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and spirit level.

Assembly Videos and Instructions

Each order comes with customised installation instructions and videos tailored to your specific setup. These are not generic guides, but step-by-step resources relevant to your exact configuration.

Top-mounted attachment

The base of the post is fixed to the floor surface using four screws.

Side-mounted attachment (Lateral Fixation)

The post is secured to the vertical surface using two screws. This is often referred to as lateral or side-mounted attachment.

Customisable Attachment Heights

If you choose lateral attachment, you can also choose the attachment height. You can let the post extend down by 350 mm, 250 mm, 195 mm or 145 mm. Generally, the larger the size, the better. Attachment height may affect the number of sections per side.

Screws for Wood Attachment

Screws for wooden substrates are included in every order. The screws are made from hardened steel with CorrSeal coating for outdoor use. Each screw features milling grooves for reduced torque and to minimise wood splitting.

Screws for Concrete Attachment

If you select attachment to a concrete substrate, appropriate screws are also included. These are hardened steel with CorrSeal coating for corrosivity class C4. Approved for cracked and uncracked concrete, hollow-core slabs, and suitable for materials such as solid and hollow brick, natural stone and more.

Lintel With or Without Wall Attachment

If your balustrade starts at a wall, you have the option to secure the first post to the wall for added stability.

When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

CLASS A

A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS B

Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS C

C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.

CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
