Upgrade Your Railing with Glass Panels and Clamps

Looking to refresh your wooden railing without tearing it all down? Our Glass & Clamp System lets you keep your existing timber posts and replace the infill with laminated safety glass – combining the warmth of wood with the clarity and elegance of glass.

Whether for a balcony, terrace, garden deck or staircase, this retrofit system delivers a clean, contemporary finish while improving safety, visibility and wind protection. It’s a smart way to modernise your home – without the need for a full rebuild.

Five different terraces with glass balustrades mounted in timber posts, each showing unique settings, heights and combinations of wood and glass.

Tailor your glass and clamp configuration

Customise your system to suit your home, style and surroundings. Whether you’re updating a rustic deck or a modern balcony, you have full control over materials, finish and glass type.

Available options include:

  • Clamp colours – black, grey, white or natural aluminium
  • Glass finish – clear, grey-tinted or opal frosted
  • Glass type – standard laminated or toughened laminated safety glass

All panels are made from 8.76 mm laminated safety glass with polished edges. For exposed or high-traffic areas, we recommend upgrading to toughened laminated glass for added impact resistance.

Easy Installation on Existing Timber Railings

This system is specifically made for retrofitting glass into existing wooden railings. Simply mount the glass panels between or outside your timber posts using high-quality clamps – no need to remove the structure.

You receive a complete kit, including:

  • Made-to-measure laminated glass panels
  • Premium glass clamps in your preferred finish
  • All fixings and printed instructions
  • Access to step-by-step installation videos

It’s quick to install using basic tools – no specialist equipment or experience required.

Built-in safety and wind protection

Besides visual impact, this system enhances comfort and safety. Laminated glass not only provides a secure barrier for children and pets – it also serves as an effective windbreak, especially when mounted on the outside of the railing.

The panels stay intact even if damaged, thanks to a bonded inner layer that holds the glass together. This makes it ideal for balconies, terraces, stairs and decking in all weather conditions.

Tested and CE-marked for peace of mind

All glass panels are CE-certified according to EN 1090-1 and meet UK safety regulations for railings and balustrades. Our laminated and toughened laminated glass is internally tested for strength and impact resistance.

We provide a full Declaration of Performance (DoP), and our systems are built to perform long-term – even in harsh outdoor environments.

Technical information

Technical details

8.76 mm Laminated Glass

Two 4 millimetre glass panes with a plastic film between them. If the glass breaks, the plastic film ensures it stays together as one part. Comes with ground and polished edges.

8.76 mm Toughened Laminated Glass

Same construction as our standard laminated glass, but with two tempered glass panes instead of one. We recommend this glass for environments in which the barrier may be exposed to repeated external stress. Comes with ground and polished edges.

Glass Options (colour)

When designing your barrier, you can also choose the type of glass. You can choose between clear glass or colored lamellae in gray or opal (coloured or frosted foil between the glass panes).

Stainless Steel Clamps

You choose between clamps in zinc (which are painted in the same color as the railing) or stainless clamps in acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316).

Lacquered Clamps

In addition to getting your clamps in zinc, stainless or raw zinc, you can also get them painted (black, white or aluminium).

Square or Rounded

When designing your railing, you can choose whether you want square or round clamps.

Millimetre Perfect

When you enter your measurements, we ask you to do so in millimetres. We create your railing to the millimetre, so that it’s a perfect fit for where you want to place it.

Wide Glasses

For glass widths over 1400 mm, we make a deduction of 44 mm from the height and calculate 6 clamps per glass – 1 extra to be attached below and 1 extra to be attached above the glass.

Everything is Included with Your Order

The package you receive from us includes everything you need to assemble your barriers. This includes posts, glass and handrails, as well as all screws, drill bits and special tools. All you need is a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and spirit level.

Assembly Videos and Instructions

Our assembly videos help you by showing specific steps of the installation process. Our assembly tips and videos are adapted to each order. They’re not general descriptions, rather, they directly concern your particular order.

Stainless Steel Parts

Since stainless steel, despite its name, isn’t immune to corrosion, all stainless steel parts need to be maintained and cleaned 1-3 times a year. If the railing is installed in an area close to the sea, it may be necessary to clean and treat it more often. Use a soft cloth to clean the surfaces with lukewarm water and a mild detergent.

Glass

Use a soft cloth to clean glass surfaces with window or mirror cleaning fluid. For more difficult stains, rubbing alcohol can be used. Afterwards, clean with window and mirror cleaning fluid for a second time. Do not use abrasive agents on glass.

Lacquered Clamps

Our lacquered clamps require little maintenance. Should stains occur, a mild detergent, water and a soft cloth is usually sufficient. Do not use products with abrasive properties, acids or alkaline agents. Avoid hard impacts with sharp details as the paintwork can be damaged and moisture can penetrate under the paintwork.

When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

CLASS A

A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS B

Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS C

C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.

CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
