Frequently Asked Questions – Wire Stair Railing

  • Can I use this for wooden steps?

Yes – the posts can be mounted on any stable surface, including wood, concrete or composite decking.

  • What's included in the stair wire railing kit?

You get everything you need: posts, cables, screws, brackets, video guides and a measurement template tailored to your staircase.

  • Can I use this system for outdoor garden stairs?

Definitely. The stainless steel is marine-grade and rust-resistant, but should be cleaned periodically – especially in coastal areas.

  • How far apart should cables be on stair railing?

We follow UK standards recommending cable gaps of no more than 100 mm. Our design tool helps you calculate this based on your chosen railing height.

  • Is the railing safe for children?

Absolutely. You can choose the number of wires to ensure spacing below 100 mm, which is the UK recommendation for child safety.

  • Can I install wire railing on my existing stairs?

Yes. Our system is designed to work on both new builds and stair renovations. You’ll just need to input your step layout and we’ll customise your kit.

Technical information

Technical details

CE-Marked Posts

The posts have been tested for both top-mounted and side-mounted installation on wooden substrates and can withstand loads of 0.5–1.0 kN/m.

Round Ø 42 mm

Round stainless steel posts with a diameter of 42 mm. For indoor use: AISI 304. For outdoor use: AISI 316.

Stainless Steel AISI 304/316

If the railing is to be installed indoors, we use stainless steel grade AISI 304. For outdoor installations, we use acid-resistant stainless steel AISI 316 for enhanced corrosion protection.

Wire Ø 4 mm

The wire infills are made of stainless steel with a diameter of 4 mm, in acid-resistant AISI 316 for long-lasting durability.

Material thickness 2 mm

Stainless Steel Handrail

Round stainless steel handrail (Ø 42 mm). AISI 304 for indoor use and AISI 316 for outdoor use. Includes all parts needed for corners. Available in lengths up to 4.4 m. Longer handrails are delivered in multiple pieces with seamless pipe connectors.

Wooden Handrail

Round wooden handrail (Ø 43 mm) available in untreated light oak or jatoba – a durable hardwood similar to teak in both colour and performance.

Corners

For wooden handrails, corners must be manually cut and fitted to ensure a perfect match. For stainless steel handrails, corner joints are included for angles exceeding 90 degrees.

Symmetrical Sections

When using our configurator, always enter the outer dimensions of the area where the railing will be placed. The system will adjust the measurements to ensure that all sections on each side are of equal length. Your railing is adapted to your space – not the other way around.

Customisable Railing Height

You can select a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm (measured from the floor to the top of the handrail).

Millimetre Perfect

When you enter your measurements, we ask you to do so in millimetres. We create your railing to the millimetre, so that it’s a perfect fit for where you want to place it.

Top-down Attachment

Secured by anchoring the post base into the floor with four screws.

Handrails with or Without Wall Attachment

If your railing starts at a wall, you can choose to attach the handrail directly to it for added stability.

Screw for Wood Attachment

If you choose mounting to timber, we provide hardened steel screws, surface-treated with CorrSeal for outdoor conditions (corrosivity class C4). These screws include milling grooves to reduce insertion torque and minimise the risk of cracking in harder woods.

Screw for Concrete Attachment

For installation on concrete, hardened steel screws with CorrSeal coating are included. Rated for outdoor use (C4), and approved for: – Cracked and uncracked concrete – Hollow-core slabs – Solid brick, hollow brick, solid mexite brick, natural stone

Everything is Included with Your Order

Your delivery contains everything you need: posts, wires, handrails, screws, drill bits, and special tools. All you’ll need are a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and spirit level.

Assembly Videos and Instructions

Our assembly instructions are tailored to your specific order. You’ll receive custom videos and guides that show how to install your exact configuration.

Stainless Steel Parts

Despite its name, stainless steel is not fully immune to corrosion. All stainless components should be cleaned and maintained 1–3 times per year. In coastal areas, more frequent cleaning may be required. Use a soft cloth with warm water and mild detergent.

Wooden Handrail

For outdoor use, clean and lightly sand the wood surface, then treat it with wood oil or similar protective products according to the climate. For indoor use, cleaning and light sanding are sufficient, and oiling is optional. All oak contains varying levels of tannic acid, which helps prevent decay. When exposed to outdoor humidity, this acid may leach out and cause discolouration on surrounding surfaces. To minimise this effect: – Oil the wood during installation – Optionally apply oxalic acid to neutralise tannins – Oxalic acid can also be used to clean discolouration Consult your local paint supplier before using oxalic acid. For long-term care, we recommend oiling the handrail a few times per year.

When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

CLASS A

A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS B

Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS C

C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.

CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
