A Modern Wire Railing System with a Sleek, Open Design

Our wire railing system offers a clean, minimalist aesthetic – perfect for garden decks, patios, balconies and interior landings. Built from marine-grade stainless steel and tailored to your exact measurements, it delivers safety and style without compromising your view.

Whether you’re after a contemporary garden boundary, a coastal-style terrace feature, or an indoor cable balustrade, wire railing provides a lightweight, versatile and visually subtle solution.

Choose between wooden or stainless steel handrails, and configure the number of horizontal wires to suit your needs. Ideal for both residential and commercial applications.

Wire Railing for Gardens, Decks and Interiors

Wire railing – also known as cable railing or horizontal wire balustrade – is especially popular in modern and coastal architecture. The slim stainless steel cables allow air and light to pass through while still acting as a safe barrier.

Best suited for:

  • Decks and terraces at ground level
  • Garden borders or patio steps
  • Indoor staircases and landings
  • Contemporary homes and public buildings

For safety reasons, wire railing is generally recommended for ground-level or low-rise areas where climbing risks are minimal.

Maintenance for Stainless Steel & Wood

While stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, it still requires basic maintenance – especially in outdoor or coastal environments.

Stainless steel maintenance:

  • Rinse regularly with water and mild soap
  • Wipe away salt or dirt to prevent surface corrosion
  • Avoid harsh abrasives to preserve the finish

Wooden handrails:

  • Oak and jatoba are untreated natural woods
  • Sand and oil the surface regularly if used outdoors
  • Be aware of natural tannins in oak that may cause temporary discolouration

Frequently Asked Questions – Wire Railing

  • How far apart should the wires be spaced?

Typical spacing is 80–100 mm, depending on regulations and number of wires selected. Our configurator helps ensure compliant spacing.

  • Do I need special tools to install it?

No. All screws, bits and fixings are included. You only need common tools like a screwdriver, level and drill.

  • Are wall brackets included for end rails?

Yes – if you select wall mounting in the design tool, wall brackets are included in the kit.

  • Can I mount this railing on a slope or uneven ground?

Yes, but it may require individual height adjustment of posts. Contact us for guidance before ordering.

  • Can I choose the number of wires?

Yes. You can configure between 3 and 8 horizontal stainless steel wires, depending on the desired look and safety requirements.

    Our configurator shows all options.

  • Does stainless steel wire rust?

AISI 316 stainless steel is corrosion-resistant but not fully rustproof. Regular cleaning is recommended, especially near the sea.

  • What’s the difference between wire railing and cable balustrade?

They refer to the same system – horizontal stainless steel cables tensioned between posts. ‘Wire railing’ is more common in UK English; ‘cable railing’ is a US term.

  • Is wire railing suitable for balconies or elevated decks?

No – wire railings are not recommended for high-level installations due to climbing risks. We suggest vertical bar or glass balustrades instead.

CE-Marked Posts

The posts have been tested for both top-down and lateral attachment to wooden substrates, and can withstand loads of 0.5–1.0 kN/m.

Round Ø 42 mm

Round posts in stainless steel with a diameter of 42 mm. For indoor use: AISI 304. For outdoor use: AISI 316.

Stainless Steel AISI 304/316

If your stainless steel railing is installed indoors, AISI 304 is used for the posts. For outdoor installations, AISI 316 is used instead, as it is acid-resistant and suitable for harsher environments.

Wire Ø 4 mm

The wires are made of stainless steel with a diameter of 4 mm, in acid-resistant AISI 316.

Material thickness 2 mm

All stainless steel components have a material thickness of 2 mm.

Stainless Steel Handrail

Round handrail in stainless steel (Ø 42 mm), made from AISI 304 for indoor use and AISI 316 for outdoor use. Corner fittings are included. Available in lengths up to 4.4 m. Longer handrails are delivered in several parts joined with a sleek pipe connector.

Wooden Handrail

Round handrail (Ø 43 mm) in untreated light oak or jatoba – a durable hardwood with appearance and properties similar to teak.

Corners

Wooden handrails should be manually shaped at corners for a precise fit. For stainless steel handrails with angles greater than 90 degrees, corner parts are included.

Symmetrical Sections

When entering your measurements in our configurator, always use the external dimensions of the area where the railing will be placed. The configurator then automatically adjusts the section lengths so that each side is symmetrical. We customise the railing to your space – not the other way around.

Customisable Railing Height

You can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the handrail.

Millimetre Perfect

All measurements should be entered in millimetres. We manufacture your railing with millimetre precision to ensure a perfect fit.

Top-down Attachment

Mounted using four screws driven directly into the floor.

Handrails With or Without Wall Attachment

If your railing begins or ends at a wall, you may choose to attach the handrail to it for added stability.

Screws for Wood Substrates

When choosing wooden attachment, hardened steel screws are included. For outdoor use, they are coated with CorrSeal – Corrosivity Class C4. Each screw features milling grooves along the shaft and tip, resulting in low driving torque and reduced risk of splitting.

Screws for Concrete Substrates

If mounting to concrete, hardened steel screws with CorrSeal coating (C4) are provided. Approved for: - Cracked concrete - Uncracked concrete - Hollow-core decks Also suitable for: - Solid brick - Hollow brick - Solid mexite brick - Natural stone

Everything included in your order

Your delivery includes all necessary components for installation: posts, wires, handrails, screws, drill bits, and special tools. You only need a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and spirit level.

Assembly Videos and Instructions

Our assembly videos and guides walk you through the exact steps of your order – tailored to your specific railing. These are not generic instructions, but bespoke to your configuration.

Stainless Steel Parts

Although stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, it still requires cleaning and maintenance 1–3 times per year. In coastal or humid environments, more frequent cleaning is recommended. Use a soft cloth, lukewarm water, and mild detergent.

Wooden Handrail

For outdoor installations, clean and lightly sand the wood. Treat with wood oil or similar products based on the climate. Indoor installations require only occasional cleaning and light sanding. Treatment is optional indoors. Oak contains varying amounts of tannic acid, depending on the moisture content. This acid helps prevent decay but may leach out during initial exposure to wet outdoor conditions, causing discolouration on surfaces below. To reduce this risk, we recommend treating the wood with oil or oxalic acid during installation. Oxalic acid can also remove any stains caused by tannic acid – consult your local paint supplier before use. To keep your wooden handrail in optimal condition, we recommend oiling it a few times per year.

When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

CLASS A

A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS B

Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS C

C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.

CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
