Alu Wire – Discreet and durable balustrade for garden, patio and decking

Looking for a balustrade that defines your space without blocking the view? Alu Wire is a rustproof, minimalist system combining horizontal stainless steel cables with strong aluminium posts – ideal for gardens, patios and raised decking. The open design feels light and modern while still offering security. Every system is made to measure and delivered as a complete kit, ready to install.

Where a wire balustrade makes sense

Alu Wire is perfect for outdoor areas where you want a subtle safety solution that blends into its surroundings. The slim horizontal wires allow light and air to pass through while maintaining a clean visual line. The aluminium frame is built to resist weather, time and wear – making it a smart choice for:

  • Balustrades for garden views, water features or courtyards
  • Low-maintenance, rustproof alternatives to glass or timber rails
  • A modern design that complements wood, stone and greenery
  • A minimal wire system for patio edges and open seating areas
  • A clean aluminium solution that balances safety and aesthetics

Customise your balustrade with our 3D tool

Use our online configurator to create a balustrade that fits your layout, style and needs. Choose colour, cable spacing, top rail and mounting options – and see your balustrade take shape in real time. Prefer a near-invisible design? Go for wide cable spacing and a neutral colour. Want a bolder edge? Add a timber top rail and closer cable intervals.

Your options include:

  • Post colour: black, white, silver or any RAL shade
  • Number of cables: adjust for style and safety
  • Top rail: optional, in aluminium or timber
  • Mounting: top-fixed or side-mounted to your surface

Simple installation with everything included

Like all our aluminium systems, Alu Wire is designed to be easy to install – even if you’re new to DIY projects. Your kit includes everything needed, from brackets to screws. Step-by-step video guides help make the process straightforward. Installation overview:

  1. Mark out the post positions
  2. Fix the posts to your base
  3. Thread cables through the integrated eyelets
  4. Tension the wires using included fittings
  5. Add top rail if chosen
  6. Final stability check – and done

Certified quality and marine-grade materials

Alu Wire is CE-marked to EN 1090-1 and built from premium materials. The stainless steel cables are AISI 316 (acid-resistant), while the powder-coated aluminium posts are finished to marine standards – the same used on sailing yacht masts.

FAQ – Aluminium Wire Balustrades

  • Can I use Alu Wire on a balcony or staircase?

No – wire balustrades are recommended for ground-level installations only, as the horizontal cables can be climbable. For raised areas, we recommend a glass balustrade instead.

  • What are the cables made from?

The cables are 4 mm twisted wire made from acid-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316) – ideal for all-weather outdoor use in the UK.

  • How many cables can I include?

That’s entirely up to you. Fewer cables create a more open look, while closer spacing offers increased safety or privacy.

  • Does the wire balustrade require maintenance?

Aluminium is virtually maintenance-free. We recommend cleaning the stainless steel cables occasionally – especially if you live near the coast.

  • Can I choose a custom colour for the balustrade?

Yes! In addition to our standard colours, you can choose any RAL shade to match your home or garden design.

Technical details

CE-Marked Posts

The posts have been tested for top-down and lateral attachment to wooden base, and can withstand loads of 0.5-1.0 kN/m.

Square 50×50 mm

Square aluminium posts and handrails with dimensions 50×50 mm.

Surface Layer 20 µm

Our aluminium products are anodised. It’s the same principle as on the mast of a sailboat, which is wind and weather resistant.

Wire Ø 4 mm

The wires are made of stainless steel with a diameter of 4 mm, in acid-resistant AISI 316.

Colour Choice

Posts are available in natural (aluminium), white, black, textured grey and seven additional shades of grey.

Material thickness 2.5 mm

Square 50×50 mm

Square aluminium posts and handrails with dimensions 50×50 mm.

Surface Layer 20 µm

Our aluminium products are anodised. It’s the same principle as on the mast of a sailboat, which is wind and weather resistant.

Wooden Handrail

Carved handrail in untreated light oak or jatoba (a hard wood with characteristics and an appearance similar to teak).

Corners

At any corners, the installer turns the wooden handrail themselves to ensure the fit is accurate. Both wood and aluminium can be cut perfectly well using a regular miter saw. In cases in which you choose an aluminium handrail and the corner’s 90 degrees, no cutting is required.

Symmetrical Sections

When entering your measurements into our configurator, always enter the outside measurements of the spot in which you wish to place your railing. Our configurator will then make the necessary adjustments. We then adjust the section measurements so that each section on each respective side is the same length. So we adapt your railing to your measurements, not the other way around.

Customisable Railing Height

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.

Millimeteranpassat

When you enter your measurements, we ask you to do so in millimetres. We create your railing to the millimetre, so that it’s a perfect fit for where you want to place it.

Attachment on Top

The foot is anchored with 4 screws in the floor.

Lateral Fixtation

The post is anchored with two screws on the side, directly against the anchoring surface.

Customisable Attachment Heights

If you choose lateral attachment, you can also choose the attachment height. You can let the post extend down by 350 mm, 250 mm, 195 mm or 145 mm. Generally, the larger the size, the better. Attachment height may affect the number of sections per side.

Lintel With or Without Wall Attachment

If the railing starts from a wall, you can choose to also attach the rail to the wall. This can provide a slightly more stable construction.

Screw for Wood Attachment

If you choose attachment to a wooden substrate, screws are included for this purpose. The screw is made of hardened steel and, in outdoor environments, also surface-treated with Corrseal – Corrosivity class C4. The screw is equipped with a milling groove along the stem and one on the tip. This means a very low screw-in torque in harder wooden materials and minimizes cracking.

Screw for Concrete Attachment

If you choose attachment to a concrete substrate, screws are included for this purpose. The screw is made of hardened steel and, in outdoor environments, also surface-treated with Corrseal – Corrosivity class C4. Approved for base material cracked concrete, uncracked concrete & perforated decks. Also suitable for solid brick, hollow brick, solid mexite brick and natural stone.

Everything is Included with Your Order

The package you receive from us includes everything you need to assemble your barriers. This includes posts, glass and handrails, as well as all screws, drill bits and special tools. All you need is a screwdriver, wrench, ruler and spirit level.

Assembly Videos and Instructions

Our assembly videos help you by showing specific steps of the installation process. Our assembly tips and videos are adapted to each order. They’re not general descriptions, rather, they directly concern your particular order.

Aluminium Parts

Poles or other aluminium parts require occasional maintenance. Should stains appear, a mild detergent, water and a soft cloth are usually sufficient. Do not use products with abrasive, acidic or alkaline properties.

Wooden Handrail

If the railing is outdoors, we recommend cleaning the handrail and sanding it with fine sandpaper. Treat the handrail using a preserving product such as wood oil or similar, depending on the weather conditions. Handrails installed indoors only require cleaning and light sanding. Treatment with wood oil or similar is optional. All oak contains varying amounts on tannic acid, depending on the moisture of the wood. This is because the tannic acid counteracts decay in the wood. When your oak lintel or handrail is exposed to a humid or wet outdoor climate for the first time, the tannic acid is secreted. Which could cause discoloration on the surface below or underneath. Therefore, we recommend that the wood gets oiled, alternatively coated with oxalic acid during the mounting in order to decrease the risk of secretion of tannic acid. The oxalic acid could also be used to clean discolorations on the surface below. Consult with your paint shop before using oxalic acid. To keep the wood in good condition, we recommend oiling the wood a few times during the year.

Symmetrical Sections

When using our configurator, always enter the outer dimensions of the area where the railing will be placed. The system will adjust the measurements to ensure that all sections on each side are of equal length. Your railing is adapted to your space – not the other way around.

Customisable Railing Height

You can select a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm (measured from the floor to the top of the handrail).

Millimetre Perfect

When you enter your measurements, we ask you to do so in millimetres. We create your railing to the millimetre, so that it’s a perfect fit for where you want to place it.

When you’re designing your balustrade, the usage class (A, B or C) gives an indication of where it’s suitable to use. Classes are based on UK Building regulations as specified by the British Standards Institution (see below), combined with our internal product tests, and take into account your specifications regarding balustrade height, section width, details, etc. They’re our recommendations to help you make the right choice! Outdoor Existing Buildings: minimum 1100 mm railing height Indoor Existing Buildings: minimum 900 mm railing height Residential environments: 0.74 kN/m Public areas: 1.5 kN/m Arenas/shopping centres: 3 kN/m Our balustrade solutions are CE marked, indicating they comply with relevant EU directives concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

CLASS A

A Class A-rated railing meets the requirements specified above and is therefore suitable for use in all types of residential environments as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, and shops. Our Class A-rated railings withstand at least 0.74 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS B

Class B railings are suitable for use in environments where the level difference from floor to ground is 0-1 meter. Our Class B-rated railings withstand at least 0.5 kN/m in linear load, and in cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact.

CLASS C

C-rated railings are suitable for use at ground level. In cases where the railing includes glass, it is safety glass designed to prevent injuries in case of impact. A railing may become C-rated if Balustradedesign, together with you as the customer, makes a modification to the railing that deviates from our standard. C-rated indicates that this specific configuration has not been tested.

CUSTOMISABLE RAILING HEIGHT

In our configurator, you can choose a railing height between 800 mm and 1100 mm from the ground to the top of the railing.
