A wire balustrade kit is one of the most popular ways to add a modern, minimal railing to a deck, patio or staircase without blocking the view. But “kit” can mean different things depending on which system you choose, and not every wire balustrade is suitable for every setting.
This guide walks through what’s included in a wire balustrade kit, the different systems we offer, and — importantly — where wire balustrades should and shouldn’t be used.

A complete wire balustrade kit includes the horizontal stainless steel cables, the posts that hold them in place, end fittings and tensioners to keep the wires taut, and all the fixings needed to secure everything to your deck, staircase or garden structure. Our Wire Balustrade Systems Explained
We offer wire balustrade across three systems, each suited to a slightly different use case.
ST Wire – Stainless Steel Wire Balustrade
Our stainless steel cable system uses two to eight horizontal 4mm wires between posts, with a choice of stainless steel or timber handrail. It’s designed for ground-level decks, patios, gardens and indoor landings, where its open, minimal profile lets light and air pass through.
Wire Railing for Stairs
Rather than adapting a deck kit to a staircase, we offer a dedicated wire railing for stairs, with posts and angled base plates designed specifically to follow the pitch of your steps. This is the system to choose if your project involves any kind of stepped or sloped run.
Alu Wire – Aluminium Wire Balustrade
Alu Wire pairs anodised aluminium posts with the same stainless steel cables, in a range of colours including black, white and custom RAL shades. It’s aimed at ground-level outdoor spaces where minimal upkeep matters most.
Important: Where Wire Balustrades Should (and Shouldn’t) Be Used
This is worth being clear about upfront: our standard horizontal wire systems (ST Wire and Alu Wire) are intended for ground-level installations — decking, patios, garden borders and similar. They’re not recommended for balconies or other elevated areas, since horizontal wires can be climbed relatively easily, which is a real safety consideration rather than just a regulatory box to tick.
If your project involves any meaningful drop, our stainless steel and glass balustrade or our vertical-bar ST Breeze system are better suited, since vertical infill doesn’t present the same climbing risk.
Cable Spacing and UK Safety Standards
You can choose between two and eight horizontal wires depending on the look and level of safety you need — more wires mean tighter spacing, which matters most where young children may be present. As a general guide, keeping gaps to around 100mm or less is recommended UK practice for child safety.
All our wire systems are CE marked in accordance with EN 1090-1, and we classify each configuration as A, B or C based on UK Building Regulations (BS 6180) alongside our own product testing.
What’s in the Box and How Installation Works
Every wire balustrade kit includes the posts, wires, handrail, screws, drill bits and any special tools required, along with printed templates and an installation video tailored to your specific order. Fitting involves marking post positions, securing the posts to a solid structure, threading the wires through each post, and tensioning them using the included fittings. No welding is needed, and most customers manage installation themselves with basic hand tools, though a professional installer is always an option for anything structurally complex.
Choosing Between Stainless Steel and Aluminium Wire
If you’re deciding between ST Wire and Alu Wire, the choice mostly comes down to look and upkeep. Stainless steel posts give a more substantial, premium feel and work well alongside our other stainless steel systems, but do need cleaning a few times a year, more often near the coast. Aluminium posts are effectively maintenance-free and available in a wider range of colours, while still using the same stainless steel cables for the infill itself.
