Sustainability at Balustradedesign
At Balustradedesign, we strive to contribute responsibly to the global community—through durable railings, recyclable materials, and transparent production in Sweden. We are aware of the complexity involved in achieving all our goals within a short timeframe, and we avoid promising more than we can deliver. However, we are determined to make decisions that promote a more sustainable future, and we consistently strive to do our best given our circumstances—from material selection and production to delivery and customer contact.
Long-lasting railings are the foundation of sustainability in our industry
Quality and sustainability are the hallmarks of our products. Our ongoing product development, combined with rigorous testing of materials and products, ensures that we manufacture and deliver railings that will last for many years without needing to be replaced. We believe this forms the foundation of sustainability in our industry – because even though recycling, transportation, and production are important parts of the equation, the single greatest environmental benefit is avoiding the need to produce, transport, and install a new railing in the first place.
Specifically, there are four things:
- Carefully considered choices of recyclable materials —aluminium, stainless steel, and glass—are all materials that can be recycled at the end of their life cycle and thus be reused as new materials instead of ending up in the waste stream.
- Resource-efficient design and production —each railing is custom-made to the customer’s specifications, which minimises waste and tailors material usage to the specific project.
- Continuous product development —we are constantly refining both our designs and material selections to deliver products that meet the demands of both today and tomorrow.
- Thorough testing of materials and products —learn more about our safety and testing work at Safety and Testing.
When a product lasts for many years without needing to be replaced, it results in less material ending up in the waste stream, fewer shipments of new products, and fewer installations over the building’s lifespan – tangible environmental benefits that begin as early as the customer’s initial purchase.
Responsible Decisions with Global Impact
As an international company with production based in Sweden, our decisions have an impact on environmental, consumer, and employment-related matters. We prioritize responsible business practices and sustainability, and we strongly believe in the importance of our actions.
For us, responsible decision-making is first and foremost about owning the entire supply chain. Design, engineering, manufacturing, and quality control all take place at the same site in Ängelholm, where our headquarters is also located. This gives us insight into exactly how the product is engineered, what materials are used, and how it is produced—and the ability to make sustainable decisions at every stage without relying on intermediaries.
By keeping our production in Sweden, we also retain expertise and jobs in the country, while local manufacturing reduces unnecessary transportation distances. We want to be honest in how we communicate our work—rather than promising quick changes or using generic sustainability phrases, we choose to be specific about what we’re actually doing. Commitment to the UN’s 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals
Balustradedesign supports the UN’s 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This means that we have identified focus areas aligned with the Agenda’s goals where we can make a difference and actively contribute.
Based on the Global Goals, we have conducted a materiality analysis to identify which of these goals are most significant for the company and our stakeholders. A materiality analysis is a method for assessing which sustainability issues have the greatest impact—both on our operations and on the people, environments, and communities we affect through our work. The results form the basis for how we prioritise our sustainability efforts and how we track their progress over time.
Sustainability work is an ongoing journey rather than a final destination. Our ambition is to continue developing our processes, our production, and our products so that we can make a greater contribution with each passing year – step by step, without losing focus or exaggerating our results.
