Choose a fixing method

The fixing method you choose can have a significant effect on the appearance of your balustrade. Several mounting options are available when ordering.

Frequently asked questions about balustrades

There is a lot to consider when choosing balustrades. Browse our frequently asked questions or contact one of our specialists for help.

Yes, different materials and balustrade types can be combined in the same project, provided the components are technically compatible and the complete construction works as intended. Glass, aluminium, stainless steel and timber can be combined to achieve the desired function and appearance.

Glass and aluminium create a light, open appearance; glass and stainless steel combine clear views with visible metal details; and timber adds warmth to metal designs. You can also combine functions – for example, a taller glass section acting as a windbreak on the most exposed side of a deck, with a more open balustrade on the remaining sides. Materials, heights and fixings must work together.

Most balustrades require some maintenance. Cleaning and checking them as needed helps keep them in good condition. Wash away dirt, pollen and salt with water and a mild detergent, and inspect the fixings periodically. Glass, aluminium and stainless steel are generally relatively easy to care for, while timber needs suitable treatment to maintain its finish.

Repair damage to coatings or timber before it deteriorates further, and clean the balustrade after winter or exposure to coastal conditions. Outdoor balustrades are designed to withstand normal weather, but after severe weather or unusual loads it is sensible to check that all components remain secure.

A stair balustrade is the complete structure designed to protect against falls from the open side of a staircase. A handrail is the part intended to provide a handhold, while a top rail is the upper finishing element of a balustrade. Depending on the design, a top rail may also serve as a handrail.

A handrail can be fitted to the balustrade or mounted separately on a wall. Different terms are sometimes used for this gripping element. On certain balustrades, the top rail can also serve as a handhold. A stair balustrade on the open side of a staircase can be combined with a wall-mounted handrail on the other side, while some frameless glass balustrades can be designed without a top rail.

The best balustrade for your deck depends on the view, the style of your home, how much privacy you want and the maintenance you are prepared to carry out. No single material or design is right for every deck, so start with what you need the balustrade to do. The right design helps make your deck a space you enjoy using.

Glass preserves the view and creates an open feel, while aluminium is relatively easy to maintain and comes in a range of colours and infill options. Vertical bars create a light appearance, and wrought-iron-style designs can suit a traditional home. If you mainly want to define the edge, you may not need a solid windbreak. On a smaller deck, a visually light balustrade can help the space feel open.

Delivery times vary depending on the product, the options selected and the current production workload. As many balustrades and awnings are made to measure, production time forms part of the overall delivery time. You'll receive an estimated delivery time when placing your order.

For balustrades, delivery times depend on the model, dimensions, glass and options chosen. For awnings, they depend on the model, size, fabric and extras. When your order has been completed and dispatched, you will receive tracking information. Lead times may be longer during busy periods, so order in good time if you have a deadline.

The right top rail depends on the railing’s material, location, maintenance requirements, and the look you want to achieve. Common options include aluminium, stainless steel, and wood, and top rail can often be customised to match the rest of the railing. Aluminium is easy to maintain and works particularly well with aluminium and glass balustrades.

Stainless steel provides a distinct metallic appearance and works well with glass or wire. Timber adds warmth and contrasts with glass and metal, but needs more care outdoors. Matching the top rail and posts in material and finish creates a more consistent look.

It depends on the potential fall height, how the deck is used and the local requirements. A small change in level does not automatically mean a balustrade is needed, but fall protection becomes increasingly important as the deck height increases. Check the requirements that apply to your property.

What lies below the edge and whether children use the deck also matter. On a multi-level deck, assess each exposed edge. Even at ground level, a balustrade can define the seating area and provide shelter or privacy. Where there is a fall risk, specify an appropriate height and design, with fixings into the supporting structure rather than decking boards alone.

Yes, lighting can be integrated into or positioned near a balustrade, depending on the system. Possible locations include beneath the top rail, near posts or along the lower edge. The correct approach depends on the product and its installation.

Light reflecting from glass can create a striking effect, but not all balustrade systems are designed for integrated lighting. Outdoors, lights, wiring and electrical connections must be suitable for exposure to moisture and weather and comply with the applicable regulations. Planning the lighting alongside the balustrade also helps keep cabling discreet.

Balustrades for decking

Decking balustrades are our best-selling category. Choose a glass balustrade to preserve views of the garden, vertical slats for a classic look or horizontal slats for a more contemporary style. The balustrade can follow the shape of your deck around corners and across different levels, including alongside steps leading down to the garden.

Start by measuring the length of the deck edge, the required balustrade height from the decking surface and the angles of any corners.

Stair balustrades – indoors and outdoors

A stair balustrade should provide protection and support while following the slope of the staircase. For outdoor applications, we often use corrosion-resistant stainless steel, while aluminium, stainless steel or timber details can provide different finishes and a warmer handhold indoors. The Linea Step system is designed to follow the angle of the stairs, and handrails in oak, stainless steel or aluminium can be found under handrails and top rails.

Balcony balustrades and Juliet balconies

Balconies often have a significant potential fall height and are used every day. We manufacture balcony balustrades with vertical bars, glass or wire. For glazed doors without a projecting balcony, see our Juliet balconies. Our glass version uses 12.76 mm toughened laminated safety glass.

Roof terraces, retaining walls, pools and indoor spaces

We also supply balustrades for roof terraces and flat roofs, where fall height and wind exposure influence the structural requirements, as well as for retaining walls where there are changes in garden levels.

Around pools and indoors – at lofts, landings and open-plan upper floors – you can choose materials to suit the setting and style.

Materials and certified manufacturing

Combine glass, aluminium, stainless steel or wire with a handrail that suits the architecture of your home. The use classes A+, A, B and C shown in our configurator are our own guidance for choosing a suitable construction. Our manufacturing process is certified to EN 1090-1. Production is regularly monitored by RISE, with a focus on traceability, quality and manufacturing processes.

Balustrade prices

Price depends on the material, dimensions, glass type and accessories. Our 3D configurator shows the price as you choose options such as glass or aluminium, height and handrails. Fixings must always be suitable for the substrate and supporting structure.
