Frequently asked questions about aluminium balustrades

Choosing the right aluminium balustrade can raise plenty of questions. Browse our FAQs or contact one of our specialists for advice.

The main differences are appearance, sightlines and how easy the balustrade is to climb. Horizontal bars create long, contemporary lines, whereas vertical bars give a more traditional pattern without the same step-like arrangement. Horizontal bars can provide footholds and may be easier to climb.

Where young children may be present and the balustrade protects against falls, vertical bars are often the more suitable choice. On a ground-level patio, where the balustrade mainly defines the space, horizontal bars can be an attractive design option. Both aluminium and stainless steel balustrades are available with bar infill.

The main differences are weight, appearance and finish. Aluminium is lightweight and can be powder-coated in a range of colours, while stainless steel is heavier and has a distinctive metallic appearance. Both can perform well outdoors when the material grade and balustrade design suit the location. Aluminium forms a protective oxide layer, with the coating providing additional surface protection.

For stainless steel, the grade must be chosen to suit the environment, particularly near the sea, and the surface cleaned as needed. The stability of a balustrade depends on the complete system, not just the post material. Choose aluminium if you want a particular colour, or stainless steel if you prefer the metal itself to be part of the design.

A wrought-iron-style aluminium balustrade has the classic appearance of traditional wrought iron, but is lighter and typically needs less maintenance than iron or steel balustrades. The main differences are weight, corrosion resistance and upkeep: the styles can be similar, but the materials are different.

Powder-coated aluminium mainly needs cleaning as required, while iron and steel need suitable corrosion protection and may require repainting as the finish wears. Aluminium is lighter and easier to handle during installation. Traditional wrought iron can offer more scope for decorative details and craftsmanship. Your choice depends on the design, weight and maintenance involved.

Aluminium is a durable, low-maintenance material for outdoor balustrades. It resists corrosion well and performs in different weather conditions when the system and finish are appropriate for the location. A powder-coated balustrade does not normally need sanding or repainting.

For routine care, it is usually enough to clean the posts and profiles with water, a soft cloth and, if needed, a mild detergent. Near the sea, rinse away salt and dirt as required. Powder coating provides protection and colour, although weather and UV exposure can affect it over time. Aluminium being lightweight does not automatically make the balustrade less stable.

Available colours and finishes depend on the balustrade material and model. Aluminium can be powder-coated in a range of RAL colours, while stainless steel is often chosen with a brushed or polished finish. Glass options may include clear, opaque or tinted glass. You can coordinate the finish with other details on your home.

On some systems, posts, top rails and glass clamps are available in matching or contrasting finishes. This allows the balustrade to complement the façade, windows and doors – for example, black posts with a timber top rail. With Color, you can select a colour to suit your project. The available colours and combinations vary by model.

Aluminium balustrades are lightweight, durable outdoors and relatively low-maintenance, making them a practical option for decking and balconies. Powder-coated aluminium generally needs cleaning as required rather than regular repainting. Unlike ordinary steel, aluminium does not develop iron rust.

Aluminium balustrades can be powder-coated in a variety of colours and combined with glass, vertical bars or other infills. Their light weight makes the components easier to handle during installation. Glass helps preserve views and natural light. Aluminium can offer good value over time because of its lower maintenance needs, although the price depends on the model, infill, dimensions and optional extras.

Aluminium balustrades – easy to maintain year after year

Aluminium is one of the lowest-maintenance materials over time. Its powder-coated finish does not normally need repainting, and its light weight can make the balustrade easier to install yourself. Usually, cleaning it as needed is sufficient.
We make every aluminium balustrade to your measurements at our factory in Ängelholm, so the sections fit your installation area.

Choose your style – glass, wrought-iron look, wire or your preferred colour

Aluminium provides the structure, but it does not dictate the style. The same material can suit anything from minimalist new-build homes to traditional period properties.

Aluminium and glass balustrades

Arcus combines glass with sturdy aluminium posts for a modern appearance, while Forma offers a more timeless design. For an uninterrupted view without posts, Vista uses an aluminium base profile along the supporting structure.

Wrought-iron-style aluminium balustrades

Retro has vertical bars that echo traditional wrought iron, with the lower maintenance needs of aluminium.

Aluminium wire balustrades

Linea combines aluminium posts with stainless steel wires, while Linea Step follows the angle of a staircase.

Your choice of colour and Juliet balconies

With Color, choose a colour to complement your home’s windows and doors. For French doors, explore Lumo in our Juliet balcony range.

Powder coating across the RAL colour range

Powder coating is not applied with a brush like conventional paint. The powder is applied electrostatically and cured in an oven to create a continuous, durable finish. Popular colours include black (RAL 9005), white (RAL 9010), anthracite (RAL 7016) and silver (RAL 9006). We also offer finishes across the RAL colour range.

Aluminium or timber?

Timber balustrades may have a lower upfront cost but typically need cleaning, preparation and repainting over time. Powder-coated aluminium usually costs more initially but often requires less upkeep afterwards.

Complete kit with an instant price

Our 3D configurator shows how your choice of infill, colour and handrail affects the appearance and price. Each balustrade is supplied as a complete kit with made-to-measure profiles, fixings and installation instructions. Fixings must always be suitable for the substrate and supporting structure.

The manufacturing process is certified in accordance with EN 1090-1. Production is continuously monitored by RISE, with a focus on traceability, quality and the manufacturing process.
