A wrought-iron-style balcony balustrade gives a traditional villa timeless elegance

Published Last updated About a 4-minute read

For a house with a strong, distinctive character, the railing is less about the product itself and more about the building it will be installed on. In this client project, a wrought-iron railing in a custom green shade tied the entire facade together, and the choice of color proved to be more important than the choice of model.

How do you choose a balcony railing that complements the style of your home?

The house in the project is a stucco villa with a red-tiled roof, mullioned windows, and deep green trim that runs throughout the building. The window frames, front door, shutters, and porch share the same shade of green. The balcony is centrally located on the upper-story gable, symmetrically above the entrance, and is the first thing that catches the eye from the driveway.

This makes the balcony railing one of the most visible design choices on the property. The railing needed to define the boundaries of the balcony, but also to blend in with a facade that already has a strong visual identity. A railing with the wrong design language—one that was too modern, too heavy, or in a color that disrupted the green line—would have altered the entire look of the building.

Why was Retro chosen in a custom green shade?

We chose Retro, our powder-coated aluminum wrought-iron railing with a classic design. Three choices determined the outcome.

Classic design language
Vertical balusters with spear-point tips, ornamental details in the lower section, and a crossbar that finishes the railing with a clean horizontal line. This wrought-iron work is perfect for classic-style homes.
Custom Color
The railing was ordered in a deep green shade to match the house’s existing woodwork. The result is a railing that does not look like it was added later, but rather like an original part of the architecture.
Aluminum Instead of Iron
Powder-coated aluminum offers the look of wrought iron without requiring the same maintenance as traditional wrought iron.

A black railing would have served as a boundary, but it would have introduced a new color into a palette that is already set. On a facade where everything else harmonizes, a contrasting color stands out more than you might think, and a matching color has a greater impact.

Wrought iron or aluminum—what’s the difference when used outdoors?

Traditional wrought iron has exactly the design aesthetic this villa calls for, but it requires more effort on the part of the homeowner. Retro achieves the same visual effect with aluminum.

Traditionally forged iron

The expression comes with more care

  • Iron can rust, especially on an exposed balcony.
  • The surface often needs to be repainted.
  • The railing needs to be inspected regularly.
Retro in powder-coated aluminum

The same look with easier maintenance

  • Aluminum does not rust like iron.
  • Powder coating is a durable finish that typically requires little maintenance.
  • Cleaning with water is usually sufficient. Follow the product's instructions.

The difference is especially noticeable over time. The green hue complements the house’s woodwork without the homeowner having to spend much time on the railing. The balcony is also furnished with a bistro table and chairs in the same shade of green. Despite the limited space, it creates a cohesive outdoor living space, as the color and design language are consistent across the railing, furniture, and house.

What should you consider regarding the height and slats of a balcony railing?

The height of the railing and the spacing between the slats affect both safety and aesthetics. The slats should be spaced so that children cannot crawl through, and the railing should not have any horizontal elements that could serve as footholds for climbing. Retros’ vertical slats are therefore a good fit, since the barrier is inherent in the design itself.

Height is a particularly relevant consideration when renovating older single-family homes, where existing railings may be lower than current standards require. Installing a new railing then provides an opportunity to update both the facade and the railing in a single step. Here, the height was adjusted to match the existing proportions of the balcony opening.

What should you consider when choosing a wrought-iron railing for your balcony?

If you have a house with classic architecture, three questions will guide your choice of balcony railing.

Before placing an order

Three questions to answer first

  • What architectural style suits this house?

Ornate metalwork and spearheads evoke classical architecture. Glass and aluminum are more commonly found on modern buildings. Let the house set the tone.

  • What is the color scheme of the facade?

A standard color works well on many houses. If the house has a consistent color scheme for its woodwork, a custom color can make the difference between a railing that’s simply attached to the house and one that’s an integral part of it.

  • How do the railing's proportions affect the facade?

The level of detail in the ornamentation and the height of the railing must be proportionate to the size of the balcony opening and the scale of the facade.

A wrought-iron railing that is part of the house

This project shows that when it comes to a balcony railing on a distinctive single-family home, the goal is to find the most appropriate solution, not the most impressive one. A retro style in a custom shade of green isn’t a complicated solution, but it’s well-balanced: the design, color, and proportions complement the building rather than competing with it. The railing shouldn’t be the star of the show. It should enhance the rest of the facade.
