When the view is the patio’s most important feature, a wire balustrade made of stainless steel can create an airy and discreet boundary. For this customer project, Tenso was chosen – our wire balustrade featuring thin horizontal wires and slender posts made of acid-resistant stainless steel. The result is a railing solution that follows the shape of the patio and lets the landscape take centre stage.
How do you design a balustrade when the view is the most important thing?
The patio in this project was built to take advantage of the unobstructed view of the surrounding area. Timber decking is situated atop a stone wall and occupies a prominent location where both the appearance and construction of the railing must harmonise with the site’s conditions.
The goal was to create a clear and secure boundary without the railing dominating the overall impression. A denser timber or metal railing would have given the patio a more defined frame. A glass balustrade could also have preserved the view, but with a different visual appearance and the potential for reflections on the glass surface.
Here, a wire balustrade became a natural design choice. The thin lines create a lighter boundary and allow the eye to continue out toward the landscape.
Why was Tenso chosen for acid-resistant stainless steel?
The choice fell on Tenso, a wire balustrade where horizontal wires run between posts made of stainless steel. The combination of narrow lines, the metal’s natural finish, and a custom-designed layout complemented the patio’s open character.
Three characteristics were particularly important for the project's appearance and function.
- Acid-resistant stainless steel
- Acid-resistant stainless steel has good resistance to corrosion and is a material often used in outdoor environments. The surface still needs to be cleaned and looked after according to how exposed the location is.
- Thin horizontal wires
- Wires creates a subtle frame in which large portions of the view remain visible between the horizontal lines. This creates an open look without a continuous surface of wood, metal, or glass.
- Custom-designed layout
- The railing was customised to fit the dimensions and shape of the patio. The placement of the posts was planned to provide a balanced distribution along the edge of the deck and a cohesive visual appearance.
How does a wire balustrade affect the view from the patio?
A wire balustrade creates a sense of openness by using thin horizontal lines instead of a solid railing panel. When you look out over the patio, wires becomes part of the frame rather than a solid surface in front of the landscape.
The effect is influenced by what lies behind the railing. Against an open sky or a waterfront landscape, wires can appear particularly unobtrusive. Against trees, bushes, or a detailed background, the lines often become more visible, but they can still contribute to a light and minimalist look.
What do you need to consider regarding the safety of a wire balustrade?
A wire balustrade needs to be chosen based on both the design of the site and the safety requirements that apply to its use. The height, openings, fixing and construction of the balustrade need to be assessed together, especially on raised patios.
Horizontal wires can make climbing easier and are therefore not suitable for all environments. It is especially important to choose an appropriate railing solution in areas where children are present or where drop height is high. Appearance should never be the only factor when a railing is intended to serve as fall protection.
How do you adapt a wire balustrade to a timber decking?
When a wire balustrade is to be fixed to a timber deck, both the dimensions and the substrate are important parts of the planning. The placement of the posts needs to work with the shape of the deck, and the fixing must be adapted to the load-bearing structure.
In this project, the posts were planned to create an even, balanced spacing along the edge of the patio. This makes the balustrade feel like a natural part of the design of the deck.
The fixing needs to be assessed on the basis of the construction and condition of the substrate. It is not enough to go only on the visible boards of the timber deck. If in doubt, the load-bearing structure and the intended fixing solution should be assessed by a competent person.
What should you keep in mind when choosing wire balustrade for a patio?
A wire balustrade can be a particularly good choice when you want to combine a minimalist look with an unobstructed view. To choose the right solution, you also need to consider the surroundings, the patio’s design, and how the railing will be used.
We recommend starting with the following questions before deciding on the type and design of the railing.
Three questions to help you make the right choice
-
Which part of the view would you like to preserve?
Start by considering the places where you’ll most often be sitting or standing. Think about how posts and wires affect your line of sight to the surroundings.
-
What conditions is the balustrade exposed to?
Weather, moisture, dirt, and the surrounding environment affect the choice of materials and maintenance requirements. Choose materials and finishes based on the location, and follow the product’s care instructions.
-
Is wire balustrade suitable for this purpose?
Evaluate drop height, safety, who will be using the patio, and how the railing can be anchored. If necessary, compare it with other types of railings before making your decision.
You can also compare different designs from our selection wire balustrades to find a solution that suits the layout and conditions of your patio.
How can a discreet balustrade enhance the overall look?
This customer project demonstrates how a well-considered choice of materials can enhance an outdoor space without detracting from the surroundings. With Tenso in acid-resistant stainless steel, timber decking achieved a minimalist frame where the slender wires interact with the unobstructed view.
When the railing’s material, lines, and placement are tailored to the location, it can become a natural part of the overall design. On a patio with a sweeping view, it’s often that balance that makes the biggest difference.
