A viewing deck in the archipelago

Published Last updated About a 2-minute read

A frameless glass balustrade preserves the view because no posts or railings obstruct the line of sight. In this project, the glass runs along the edge of the deck, creating an almost invisible fall protection, with the unobstructed view of the cliffs and the sea taking centre stage.

The glass is held in place by a low-profile aluminium railing mounted on top of the decking. Every detail has been chosen with the location in mind, from the naturally weathered wood of the deck to the transparency of the glass, which reflects light without causing glare. This demonstrates how the right railing can enhance the overall impression rather than detract from it.

When is a frameless balustrade suitable for outdoor use?

A frameless glass balustrade is best suited for situations where fall protection is needed but the view is part of the value. You'll find more solutions among our glass balustrades.

When there are differences in elevation
In areas where there is a risk of falling but sightlines are important, the glass provides protection without obstructing the view.
On balconies, terraces, and rooftops
In spots with a view, where a railing with posts would spoil the view.
In coastal environments
Where weather resistance is crucial. The glass, profile, and surface treatment must be selected to withstand wind and moisture.

How is the balustrade constructed in this project?

The railing consists of three parts that work together: the glass, the floor profile, and the deck on which they are mounted.

Project details

Glass, profile and timber as a whole

Glass
Laminated safety glass, where an intermediate layer holds the glass together in case it breaks. The thickness and dimensions of the glass are tailored to drop height, wind, and load.
The floor profile
A low aluminium profile that is mounted on top of the decking and holds the glass in place without posts.
The Deck
The naturally grayed wood and the transparency of the glass complement each other. The glass reflects the light without causing glare.

Does a glass balustrade work in high-risk situations?

Yes, a glass balustrade can be used even in locations with strong winds and harsh weather, but in that case, the entire system must be designed to withstand the conditions at that location. The glass, floor profile, and fixing must collectively be able to withstand the loads that may occur, including point loads.

Glass and aluminium typically require little maintenance. Clean them as needed to keep the view clear. When chosen correctly, the system works just as well in a private garden as it does on a rooftop terrace.
