A Balance Between Safety and Views
This outdoor project demonstrates how a wire balustrade made of stainless steel from our series Tenso can frame both the staircase and the deck in a discreet and functional way. The railing follows the edge of the deck around the corner and continues along the exterior staircase – a practical solution that provides safety without feeling confining.
The horizontal wires create an airy look and preserve the view of the garden. Posts is made of brushed stainless steel, which makes the railing resistant to weather and moisture.
What characterises a discreet wire balustrade for outdoor environments?
The railing in this project consists of four parts that together create an open yet cohesive design.
- stainless steel
- Posts is made of brushed, acid-resistant stainless steel, selected for outdoor use.
- Horizontal wires
- Wires gives an open feel and offers a view of the garden.
- Fixing in the crate
- Posts are attached directly to the deck, providing a clean and unobtrusive solution.
- A coherent system
- The same design is used throughout the entire entrance area, from the edge of the balcony down the stairs.
How can an outdoor stair balustrade create a modern look?
By combining decking balustrade and staircase balustrade into a cohesive system, the patio takes on a calm and unified look. The horizontal lines enhance the home’s architecture, and the stainless steel complements both timber paneling and decking. The result is a shelter that blends in without compromising on functionality.
Why does the rail perform better with decking balustrade and staircase balustrade in the same system?
A common question when building a deck is how to handle the railing where the deck meets the stairs. If you combine two different railing brands, you’ll often end up with visible joints and different profile dimensions. If you choose the same system for both the deck and the stairs instead, you’ll get a continuous line from the highest point of the deck down to the lowest step of the stairs.
It is at the transition between the patio and the stairs that the details are most noticeable. When posts and wires follow the same line throughout the entire design, the outdoor space feels more thoughtfully designed. In this project, wires follows the edge of the patio before continuing down along the stairs, creating a smooth transition between two surfaces used in different ways. The railing marks the difference in level without creating a heavy barrier toward the garden.
Since the railing is attached directly to the decking, the staircase feels like an integral part of the patio rather than a separate addition. The open wire balustrade allows the greenery and light to be seen from the patio, and the railing complements the wood surfaces and the home’s aesthetic without dominating the space.
What should you keep in mind when using a handrail on an outdoor staircase?
The handrail is the part of the railing you use for support, so its shape and placement are important for both comfort and safety.
Why does stainless steel work so well against timber decking?
On a timber staircase with decking as the surface layer, stainless steel serves as a counterpoint to the organic character of the wood. The brushed surface does not reflect light aggressively and does not interfere with the decking’s own colour development over the years. The wood is allowed to develop freely, while stainless the steel remains as a subtle contrasting material.
