A black, wrought-iron-inspired railing can provide the pool area with a classic and cohesive frame. In this customer project, Retro, our powder-coated aluminium balustrade with vertical bars, was chosen to frame a spacious timber decking around the pool. The black colour creates a clear contrast against the wood, while the railing’s open design allows light and the surroundings to remain part of the outdoor space.
How does a black wrought iron balustrade create a stylish setting around the pool?
Around a larger pool deck, the railing can play a significant role in how the entire outdoor space is perceived. It marks the boundary between the pool area and the surrounding landscape and can also help tie together the pool, timber decking, and the home’s architecture.
For this project, the Retro in black was chosen. The vertical bars give the railing a classic look, while the dark colour provides a distinct contrast to the natural materials of the timber deck and the greenery surrounding the pool.
Thanks to its open design, the railing isn’t as visually obstructing as a solid fence. This creates a balanced look where the pool area’s spacious surroundings remain the focal point.
What sets the Retro balustrade apart in this pool project?
Retro wrought iron railing in aluminium was chosen for the pool area. The model combines inspiration from traditional wrought iron railings with a modern material and a powder-coated finish.
Retro comes in different designs, with the option to adapt the colour, top rail and decorative details, among other things. In this project it is above all the black colour scheme and the classic design language of the vertical bars that give the balustrade its character.

Can Retro be used as a safety balustrade around a pool?
A railing with vertical bars can be an interesting option when the pool area needs to be enclosed. The vertical bars typically offer fewer opportunities for climbing than horizontal wires or slats, which is an important feature in environments where children are present.
However, this does not mean that a standard decking balustrade automatically serves as a safe pool enclosure. If the railing is to prevent children from reaching the water, the entire safety system must be designed for that purpose.
The height of the railing, the spacing between the bars, openings at ground level, and connections to other building components must be evaluated together. This also applies to any gates and other access routes to the pool.
What do you need to consider when a Retro balustrade is fixed at a pool deck?
When a railing is intended to frame a larger pool deck, its placement must be planned based on both the design of the deck and the function of the pool area. The placement of the posts, corners, and any openings affects how the railing connects to the rest of the patio.
Retro can be adapted for different fixing surfaces, including timber and concrete. Which fixing method is suitable depends on the construction of the substrate and the loads the balustrade needs to withstand. When fixing to timber decking, it is important that the anchoring is made into a suitable load-bearing structure and not only into the decking boards.
Around a pool, the placement of the railing must also be coordinated with, for example, the pool roof, pool cover, and access paths. If a gate is to be included in the pool’s safety system, its design, placement, and closing mechanism must also meet the requirements applicable to the specific use.
How do you maintain a black powder-coated aluminium balustrade by the pool?
Powder-coated aluminium has good resistance to corrosion and normally needs less surface treatment than traditional wrought iron. However, this does not mean the balustrade is completely maintenance-free.
Near a pool, aluminium surfaces may be exposed to water splashes, dirt, and residue from pool chemicals. The railing should therefore be cleaned with water, a mild detergent, and a soft cloth, following the product’s care instructions. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaning products that can damage the finish.
Also check the railing's fixings and look for any damage to the finish. How often cleaning and inspection are needed depends on the location, usage, and how exposed the pool area is.
A classic railing that connects the pool and the patio
This customer project shows how a black Retro balustrade can create a sleek, clear frame around a generous pool deck. The combination of vertical bars, powder-coated aluminium and a classic wrought-iron-inspired form gives the outdoor area a cohesive look.
The black colour enhances the contrast with the wood and greenery, while the open railing design maintains a connection with the surroundings. With the right design, fixing, and a separate assessment of the pool’s safety requirements, the railing can become a natural part of the overall pool area.
