Aluminium glass balustrade on a mountain-view balcony

Published Last updated About 6 pages

A glass balustrade on a balcony in a mountain setting needs to work with both the landscape and the building’s construction. In this customer project, Forma was chosen – our glass balustrade with aluminium posts and safety glass. The open glass infill lets the view of the dramatic scenery take centre stage, while the slender posts give the balcony a clear, pared-back frame. In an environment with changing temperatures, wind and winter weather, the choice of materials and the fixing also become important parts of the whole.

Why choose glass balustrade for a balcony with a mountain view?

When a house is situated in hilly terrain, the view often becomes an important part of the architecture. Mountains, slopes, and the surrounding nature create an environment where the balcony can feel like an extension of the landscape.

For this project, a glass balustrade was chosen to preserve the open feel. The glass panels allow the eye to wander out over the surroundings, while the aluminium posts create a recurring rhythm along the edge of the balcony.

The result is a modern railing that clearly defines the balcony without creating a solid visual barrier. The combination of transparent glass and metal is particularly well-suited when you want nature and the building’s shape to be the most prominent features.

How is the Forma balustrade in the project designed?

Forma glass balustrade in aluminium was chosen for the balcony. The model combines aluminium posts with glass panels held in place by glass clamps, creating an open and cohesive look.

In the mountainous setting, the straight lines of the posts create a contrast to the landscape’s more irregular shapes. At the same time, the glass ensures that the view remains visible through the railing, both when standing on the balcony and when sitting near the edge.

What properties does aluminium have in a rock- glass balustrade?

Aluminium is a common material used in outdoor railings thanks to its light weight and good resistance to corrosion. It can be combined with various finishes and colours to suit both modern and more traditional buildings.

In mountainous environments, it is important to distinguish between the material’s fundamental properties and how the finished railing structure functions. Temperature fluctuations, wind, and winter conditions affect not only posts but also the glass, hardware, and fixings.

Property What it means Things to Keep in Mind
Corrosion resistance Aluminium forms a natural oxide layer that helps protect the material. Even aluminium can be affected by corrosion. Surface treatment and the environment must be taken into account.
Low weight Aluminium is lighter than many other metals and can be used to create a flexible railing design. The balcony's load-bearing capacity and the railing's fixing must still be checked.
Surface Treatment Powder coating can provide a protective finish and a variety of colour options. UV light, wear and tear, and weather can affect the finish over time. Follow the care instructions.
Temperature fluctuations Aluminium and glass can be affected by changes in temperature. The railing system's fixings, and connections must be adapted to accommodate the movement of the materials.

Aluminium’s properties make it an attractive material for many outdoor settings, but the right railing design must always be chosen based on the actual conditions of the location. On a balcony in a mountainous area, it is therefore particularly important to evaluate the entire structure and not just the material of the posts.

What safety glass is needed on a balcony with a large drop height?

On an elevated balcony, the design of the glass is of great importance. This is especially true when the balcony is located above a steep slope or other elevation difference where the consequences of a fall could be serious.

Toughened and laminated glass have different properties. Toughening affects the glass’s strength and how it breaks, while lamination involves glass panels bonding the glass with an interlayer that helps hold the pieces together if they shatter.

Forma is available with laminated safety glass, but which glass build-up is suitable for a particular balcony depends on, among other things, the drop height, the dimensions of the glass, the fixing and the loads. Where there are large differences in level, it is particularly important that the glass and the other parts of the balustrade are dimensioned for the intended use.

Forma or Vista – which glass balustrade is suitable for a balcony in a mountainous setting?

When the view is important, both glass balustrades with posts and frameless systems can be attractive options. The difference lies primarily in how the glass is anchored, how much of the structure is visible, and what requirements the system places on the substrate.

Forma uses aluminium posts and glass clamps to hold the glass panels in place. Posts becomes a visible part of the railing’s design and can complement the building’s facade and other architectural details.

Vista frameless glass balustrade It lacks traditional vertical posts between the glass sections and therefore provides a more continuous line of sight. At the same time, a frameless system may place different demands on the glass, fixing, and the load-bearing structure.

Which railing is best suited is therefore not determined solely by the view or the age of the balcony. The condition of the substrate, its load-bearing capacity, installation options, and applicable safety requirements must be assessed for each system.

What do you need to keep in mind regarding snow, ice, and wind when using a balcony balustrade?

A balcony in an exposed mountainous environment can be affected by strong winds, snow accumulation, and frequent temperature fluctuations. When designing the railing, it is important to take into account the loads that may occur at the site, especially when large glass surfaces are exposed to wind.

Snow and ice must also be taken into account. If snow accumulates against the glass or if snow removal takes place near the railing, loads may occur that do not correspond to normal use. Glass, posts, and fixings must therefore be suitable for the specific environment.

The balcony’s substrate is also crucial. A structure made of concrete, wood, or another material requires a mounting solution designed specifically for that substrate. You cannot assume that the same installation method will work on all types of balconies.

How do you match the colour of the aluminium balustrade to the house's exterior?

The colour of a glass balustrade affects how clearly posts stands out against both the building facade and the surrounding landscape. Dark colours can create a striking contrast against light-coloured facades, while lighter or metallic finishes can contribute to a different, more subdued look.

Forma is available in several finishes and colours, with the option of additional RAL colours depending on the product choices and options. This makes it possible to match the look of the balustrade to, for example, timber facades, render, stone and other building materials.

In a house with a view of the mountains, the colour scheme can be used to make the railing either blend in with the facade or stand out as a more prominent architectural detail. The choice should be based on the house’s colours, the appearance of the glass, and how the balcony is perceived from different angles.

How do you care for a glass balustrade on a balcony in a mountainous area?

An aluminium glass balustrade needs to be cleaned and inspected regularly, even though the material is highly resistant to weathering. The glass sections can be cleaned using methods intended for glass, while the aluminium profiles must be maintained according to the surface treatment instructions.

After periods of strong winds, snow, or ice, it may be wise to check the condition of the railing. Pay particular attention to visible damage to the glass, changes at fixings, and any effects from snow removal or accumulated ice.

If any part of the railing appears to be damaged or loose, the structure must be inspected before it is used again. Always follow the current installation and maintenance instructions for the selected model.

How does Forma enhance the experience of a balcony in a mountain setting?

This customer project demonstrates how a glass balustrade can clearly define the boundaries of a balcony without detracting from the view. With Forma, aluminium posts, and transparent safety glass, the open feeling toward the mountains and the surrounding nature is preserved.

The railing’s straight lines provide a serene contrast to the more dramatic terrain. When materials, glass, and fixing are chosen with the site’s conditions in mind, the railing can become a natural part of the building’s architecture while also fulfilling its intended function.
