A patio awning is primarily a sunshade and should be retracted in strong winds, heavy rain, and snow. Depending on the model, fabric, and installation, it can withstand light winds and light rain, but should not be used as permanent weather protection or a roof. The fabric can withstand light rain if the slope is sufficient for the water to run off.
If water collects on the awning or snow accumulates, the load increases significantly, and both the awning and the structure can be damaged. A wind sensor can retract the awning automatically, but you should still retract it yourself before a storm. Let a wet awning dry before leaving it retracted for an extended period.
