Handrail care depends on the material and finish. Keeping the gripping surface clean helps maintain a comfortable, secure grip. Wipe timber handrails with a soft, slightly damp cloth and, if needed, a mild cleaning product, taking care not to soak the wood. Timber and metal require different maintenance.
If the timber feels dry, rough or worn, it may be lightly sanded and refinished with a product suitable for the existing finish. Clean aluminium and stainless steel handrails with water, a soft cloth and a mild detergent, removing grease from hands as needed. Outdoor handrails are more exposed to sun, rain and temperature changes, so check their condition more frequently.
