A glass balustrade with stainless posts can create a clear frame for a patio without obstructing the view. For this customer project, we selected Prime, our glass balustrade with round posts in brushed stainless steel, laminated safety glass, and a round top rail. The railing follows the edge of a spacious timber deck overlooking the lake and gives the outdoor space an open and cohesive look where nature remains the focal point.
Why is a stainless steel glass balustrade a good fit for a balcony with a lake view?
On a balcony overlooking the water and the landscape, the design of the railing plays a major role in how the outdoor space is experienced. A solid railing can create a clear visual boundary, while a glass balustrade allows the eye to travel through the structure and out toward the surroundings.
In this project, clear glass panels were combined with round posts in stainless steel. The glass maintains a connection to the lake and the surrounding greenery, while the brushed metal profiles provide the deck with a subtle yet distinct frame.
The stainless surface also creates a contrast with the warmer materials of the timber deck. Together, glass, steel, and wood create a modern look that harmonises with both the house and the surrounding nature.
Which glass balustrade was used on the balcony?
The choice fell on Prime stainless steel glass balustrade, a model in which stainless steel posts are combined with safety glass held in place by clamp fixings. In this project, round posts with a brushed finish and a matching round top rail were used.
The railing was installed on top of the patio’s timber decking and follows the edge of the patio. The transparent glass sections create an open frame, while the stainless details give the structure a cohesive look.
- Railing model
- Prime, a glass balustrade featuring stainless posts and glass panels that give the deck a modern and open feel.
- Round stainless posts
- Posts stainless steel n AISI 316 stainless steel, with a brushed finish that creates a soft metallic look.
- Laminated safety glass
- Clear glass panels that preserve the view of the lake and are held in place between posts and glass clamps.
- Round top rail
- A round top rail made of stainless steel follows the top edge of the railing and creates a cohesive finish together with the round posts.
- Installation
- Posts are mounted on top along the deck's timber decking. Fixing must work in conjunction with the underlying load-bearing structure.
How do round posts and a brushed finish affect the racket's appearance?
The round stainless steel posts give a soft, pared-back design that works with both timber and glass. The brushed surface has a fine texture that differs from a mirror-polished finish and gives the metal a more muted look.
On this balcony, the shape of the posts complements the round top rail. This gives the railing a cohesive design in which the same design language is repeated along the entire edge.
Top rail It also provides a clear upper boundary for the glass sections and a surface to hold onto. How it functions as a support and what requirements apply to its design must be assessed based on the railing’s location and intended use.
How does the top mounting feature work on glass balustrade on timber decking?
With top fixing, the balustrade’s posts are placed on the top of the deck. This gives a clear fixing line along the edge of the patio and allows the glass panels to form a continuous boundary between the posts.
In this customer project, the Prime posts are placed on top of the timber decking. The round posts and the stainless steel top rail follow the line of the balustrade and create a uniform frame around the patio.
When fixing to a timber deck, the fixing needs to be planned around the load-bearing structure. The visible decking boards cannot be assumed to cope with the loads transferred from the balustrade on their own. The framing, substrate and fixing points therefore need to be checked before the fixing is carried out.
What do you need to consider regarding safety glass and fall protection on a raised deck?
A glass balustrade on a raised deck must be designed in accordance with drop height, the intended use of the patio, and the supporting structure. The properties of the glass, the design of the posts, glass clamps, and fixings must be evaluated together.
Laminated safety glass was used in this project. It consists of glass panes bonded together with an interlayer that helps hold the pieces together if the glass breaks. This is an important property in many balustrade constructions, but lamination alone does not mean that the whole balustrade meets the requirements for fall protection.
The height of the railing, the function of the crossbar, and the load-bearing capacity of the mounting must also be adapted to the specific balcony. The technical documentation for a railing system must therefore be reviewed to ensure it is suitable for the specific design and location intended for use.
How do you care for a stainless steel glass balustrade outdoors?
Stainless steel has good resistance to corrosion and is a common material for outdoor balustrades. AISI 316 has properties that make the material relevant even in more exposed environments, but how well it performs depends on location, exposure and maintenance.
The brushed stainless posts and top rail should be cleaned as needed using methods appropriate for the surface finish. The glass sections can be wiped down to remove dirt, pollen, and other deposits that affect visibility.
Glass clamps, top rails and the post fixings also need to be checked in line with the product instructions. On a deck with a timber structure, it is especially important to look out for changes in the substrate or at the balustrade’s fixing points.
How does Prime create an open-air deck with a lake view?
This customer project demonstrates how a stainless steel glass balustrade can combine a clear boundary with an open view. With Prime, round stainless posts, laminated safety glass, and a matching top rail, the deck was given a cohesive frame where the lake and landscape continue to be an important part of the overall experience.
The combination of brushed stainless steel, transparent glass, and wood gives the patio a modern look that blends with nature. The railing accentuates the patio’s shape without creating a solid visual barrier to the surroundings.
