Height-adjustable glass balustrade on a patio

Published Last updated About 5 pages

A height-adjustable glass balustrade allows you to adapt windbreak to the weather without permanently enclosing the patio. For this customer project, we selected Flex, our adjustable aluminium glass balustrade, and laminated safety glass. The railing is positioned between two brick pillars overlooking an open grassy area. When the wind picks up, the upper glass section can be raised to provide more shelter, and when the weather is calmer, it is lowered again to create a more open feeling.

Why choose a height-adjustable glass balustrade for your patio?

On a patio facing open grassy areas, wind conditions can change throughout the day. A sturdy, tall windbreak can provide shelter while also creating a more secluded feeling, even when the weather is calm.

A height-adjustable glass balustrade lets you switch between different heights as needed. In the lowered position the boundary is lower and the patio feels more open. When the wind picks up, the movable glass section can be raised to give greater protection from the wind.

In this project, the adjustable feature makes it possible to stay connected to the surrounding greenery while also allowing the patio to be more sheltered when needed. The glass lets in natural light and maintains a clear view even when raised.

Which height-adjustable glass balustrade was used in the project?

The choice fell on Flex (height-adjustable) glass balustrade, an adjustable windbreak with aluminium profiles, and laminated safety glass. The design combines a fixed glass section with a movable upper glass section.

In this customer project, the railing was installed between two brick pillars. This provides a clear frame for windbreak and allows the glass sections to blend seamlessly with the patio’s existing architecture.

Manual adjustment
The upper glass section can be raised and lowered by hand so that the height of the windbreak can be adjusted as needed.
Aluminium profiles
Powder-coated aluminium profiles frame the glass and give the construction a pared-back, cohesive look.
Laminated safety glass
The glass sections let in natural light and preserve the view of the open lawn even as the windbreak is raised.
Location
The railing is situated between two brick pillars on a patio that overlooks a lawn and greenery.

How does Flex work when the glass is raised and lowered?

Flex has a fixed lower section and a movable upper glass section. The manual raise-and-lower function means the height of the windbreak can be adjusted without any electric control.

When the upper glass panel is raised, it creates a larger, continuous glass surface that can block the wind and help create a more sheltered seating area. When the need decreases, the glass can be lowered again, providing a lower barrier and a more open feeling toward the surroundings.

The adjustable height is particularly useful on patios where wind conditions vary. The amount of shade the glass provides depends on the wind direction, placement, height, and the patio’s overall design.

How does an adjustable glass windbreak fit between brick pillars?

A glass windbreak doesn't have to be just a freestanding enclosure along the edge of a balcony. It can also be placed adjacent to existing building elements – for example, between pillars – where the glass becomes part of the patio's design.

In this project, the brick pillars form a clear frame around the Flex balustrade. The combination of brick, aluminium and glass brings together materials with different characters. The brick gives a bold, solid frame, while the glass lets light and views pass through the opening.

When installing the railing in this manner, its dimensions and fixing must be adapted to the structure of the substrate. The fact that a windbreak is positioned between brick pillars does not automatically mean that the pillars are suitable as load-bearing attachment points. This must be assessed based on the actual structure and wind loads.

Can a height-adjustable windbreak preserve the view?

A height-adjustable windbreak with transparent glass can maintain a clear view even when the glass is raised. This makes the solution an attractive option for patios where you want to create a sheltered area without building a solid wall facing the garden.

In this project, the open grassy area is an important part of the patio’s character. The glass panels maintain a connection with the surroundings, while the height of the windbreak can be adjusted according to the weather.

Flex can also be used on other types of decks and terraces where windbreak and transparency need to be combined. The suitable position and design depend on how the patio is used, how the wind comes in and what structure there is to fix it to.

What do you need to keep in mind when installing a height-adjustable glass balustrade?

When installing a retractable glass balustrade, both the fixed structure and the movable glass section must be adapted to the site conditions. Wind loads, the dimensions of the glass, fixings, and the load-bearing capacity of the foundation are important factors in the planning process.

Since the glass surface is higher when raised, the wind load on the structure may increase. The railing’s placement and anchoring must therefore be capable of withstanding the loads that may occur where the windbreak is to be used.

The structure of the glass is also important. Laminated safety glass helps keep the glass pieces together if the glass breaks, but that does not automatically mean that the entire railing structure is suitable as fall protection for a raised patio.

How do you maintain a height-adjustable glass windbreak?

An adjustable glass balustrade requires maintenance that takes into account the glass, the aluminium profiles, and the moving mechanism. The glass panels can be cleaned using methods intended for glass, while the powder-coated aluminium surfaces must be cleaned gently according to the product’s instructions.

It is also important to keep the moving parts free of dirt and to check that the lifting and lowering functions are working as intended. Fixings and other structural components need to be inspected regularly, especially in areas exposed to strong winds.

If the glass is difficult to move, the structure moves more than usual, or any part appears to be damaged, windbreak should be checked before continuing to use it. Always follow the current installation and maintenance instructions for Flex.

What does the project on adjustable windbreak in open outdoor spaces show?

This customer project demonstrates how a height-adjustable glass balustrade can give an outdoor space different functions depending on the weather. By placing Flex between the brick columns, a windbreak was created that blends into the architecture of the outdoor space while preserving the view of the open lawn.

The ability to raise the glass when the wind picks up and lower it when the weather is calmer allows the patio to alternate between a more sheltered and a more open feel. The combination of aluminium, safety glass, and adjustable height provides a flexible solution that accommodates both functionality and the character of the space.
