Juliet balconies in a black wrought-iron-inspired design

Published Last updated About 5 pages

A Juliet balcony gives French doors on an upper floor a safe barrier without the house needing a projecting balcony. In this customer project, several black Juliet balconies in the Retro model were chosen – our wrought-iron-inspired balustrade in powder-coated aluminium. The vertical balusters create a classic frame around the window sections and give the newly built house a cohesive architectural look.

What is a Juliet balcony, and how does it work?

A Juliet balcony is a railing installed in front of a window door that opens, where there is no extended balcony floor to step out onto. The railing serves as a barrier and fall protection in front of the opening, while still allowing the door to be used to let in natural light and fresh air.

Unlike a traditional balcony, a Juliet balcony does not create any additional outdoor floor space. Instead, it is part of the facade’s design and can provide a window section with a more distinct architectural frame.

Several Juliet balconies were installed along the facade of this newly built house. By using the same model and colour for all the railings, a cohesive look was created in which the window sections complement one another.

Why was Retro chosen for the house’s Juliet balconies?

The choice fell on Retro Juliet balcony, a powder-coated aluminium balustrade with a look inspired by classic wrought-iron railings. The vertical balusters and horizontal details give the balustrade a clear form that suits both traditional and contemporary architecture.

For this project, the combination of classic form and modern materials was particularly interesting. The black railings create a recurring detail along the facade, while the open slatted structure maintains a connection with the surroundings.

Forging-inspired design
Vertical balusters and distinct horizontal lines give the railing a classic look without the structure having to be made of traditional wrought iron.
Powder-coated aluminium
Aluminium allows for a minimalist railing with good corrosion resistance. The powder-coated surface contributes to the railing's colour and finish.
Black colour scheme
The black slats create a contrast against the house's light-coloured facade and clearly frame the French doors.
Uniform facade
By using the same railing model for multiple openings, the house achieves a consistent design that ties the window sections together.

Why do black Juliet balconies work well against a light-coloured facade?

Black Juliet balconies create a striking contrast against a light-coloured facade. The railing’s vertical and horizontal lines accentuate the shape of the window section and give the building a more distinctive architectural appearance.

When several Juliet balconies are placed along the same facade, the effect is enhanced. The railings create a recurring rhythm that can give the building more structure while also establishing a visual connection between the various windows on each floor.

In this project, the black colour ensures that the Retro railings stand out clearly without requiring a heavy or dense construction. The open slats allow light to pass through and give the railing a lighter appearance than a solid panel.

How do you install a Juliet balcony on the facade?

A Juliet balcony is installed in front of a French door and must be anchored to a structure capable of withstanding the loads the railing will bear. The choice of fixing depends, among other things, on the facade’s construction, the underlying materials, and the design of the opening.

In new construction, it is advantageous to plan the placement and fixing as early as the design phase for the windows and the facade. This allows the necessary conditions for installing the railing to be incorporated before the facade is completed.

When retrofitting an existing building, the structure must be inspected with particular care. Surface layers such as plaster or exterior cladding cannot automatically be considered a load-bearing substrate. Fixing must be adapted to the actual structure behind the visible surface of the facade.

What should you consider before ordering a Juliet balcony?

When planning a Juliet balcony, it is important to start from both the dimensions of the French doors and the construction of the facade. The balustrade must be adapted to the opening and the fixing conditions while also suiting the building’s architecture.

The following questions will help you gather the information you need to choose the right railing.

Before placing an order

Three key checkpoints

  • How big is the opening?

Check the width, location, and opening direction of the French door. The dimensions and location of the rail must be planned based on the opening and the specific installation solution.

  • To which structure should the railing be attached?

Find out how the facade and the load-bearing structure are constructed. Timber, concrete, brick, and other materials may require different solutions for fixing and any necessary reinforcement.

  • Should multiple balustrades have the same appearance?

If the house has multiple Juliet balconies, it’s a good idea to coordinate the style, colour, and proportions. A consistent design language along the facade can create a more harmonious overall look.

How do you maintain a powder-coated aluminium Juliet balcony?

Powder-coated aluminium is a practical material for Juliet balconies because it has good resistance to corrosion and can be used in many outdoor environments. At the same time, the material needs to be cleaned and checked to maintain its appearance and function.

Dirt, pollen, and other deposits can usually be removed using gentle cleaning methods that are suitable for the painted surface. How often cleaning is needed depends on the location, weather conditions, and how exposed the facade is.

The rail's fixings and other structural components must also be inspected in accordance with the product's instructions. Always follow the care instructions that apply to the specific model and avoid methods that could damage the surface finish.

How can Retro give a newly built house a classic look?

This customer project shows how Juliet balconies can become an important part of a building’s facade architecture even without projecting balcony floors. With several black Retro balustrades, the house’s French doors were given a clear, uniform frame that combines classically inspired lines with a modern material.

The vertical balusters and the black powder coating create a recurring detail against the light-coloured facade. When the shape, colour and position of the balustrade work with the rest of the building, the Juliet balcony becomes both a functional barrier and a natural part of the house’s overall impression.
