The starting point: a patio where pool deck took centre stage
The project was based on a patio with a built-in pool, a raised timber deck in warm tones, and a garden with pine trees, sandy areas, and lush greenery. The space has a tranquil character, featuring natural materials and clean lines. Pool deck extends around the water and continues out into a seating area for lounge chairs and a dining table. When a space already has such a strong identity of its own, the railing becomes a delicate matter.
A railing around a pool or deck should serve two purposes: define the edge while blending into the overall design. More solid solutions, such as slats or glass, would have disrupted the open feel and obstructed the view of the garden. What was needed was a railing that is visible when it needs to be and disappears when it doesn’t need to take up space.
How can a wire balustrade be framed without closing it off?
The choice fell on Linea, a wire balustrade in aluminium with horizontal wires in stainless steel. It suits patios where openness and views are important, and it lets the rest of the setting be the star. The balustrade clearly marks the edge of the deck without taking the eye away from the pool, the timber decking or the garden behind.
In this project, the railing’s light silver tone helps to highlight the warm tones of the deck. The two materials complement each other rather than clash. The result is a patio that feels like a cohesive outdoor space, where the pool, deck, stairs, and railing each have their place.
Why is wire balustrade a good fit for pool deck and uteplats?
A wire balustrade gives a completely different feel to a balustrade with slats or glass. The horizontal lines are thin and the gaps are open, so the eye can travel through the balustrade towards the water, the plants or the landscape. That is why wire balustrades are a popular choice for modern patios, timber decking and pool decks, where the design should feel pared back and stylish.
What should you consider when choosing a balustrade for your balcony, patio, or pool deck?
Three questions determine almost the entire selection process. Answer them before choosing a railing type.
Three questions to answer first
-
What kind of feel should the balustrade convey?
A wire balustrade creates an open, airy feel and a sleek, modern look. Glass railings let light through but reflect more. Horizontal slats made of wood or aluminium provide a warmer feel and more privacy. Choose based on the atmosphere you want to create.
-
What does the surrounding area look like?
Sun, moisture, and outdoor use place demands on the material. Near a pool, the coast, or in exposed locations, stainless steel is a common choice. Follow the product’s care instructions.
-
What is the drop height?
The drop height determines the height of the balustrade. Measure from the finished floor surface before ordering, so that the dimensions are right from the start.
What are the benefits of an outdoor wire balustrade?
The benefits are mainly related to visibility and aesthetics. You’ll find more solutions among our wire balustrades for balconies, patios, and timber decking.
- Open design
- The railing preserves the view – for example, of the pool, the ocean, or the garden.
- A stylish look
- A modern design that's perfect for patios, decks, and timber decking.
- Thin lines
- The railing takes up little visual space and doesn't dominate the patio.
- Materials for outdoor use
- Aluminium and stainless steel are materials intended for outdoor use. Maintenance and lifespan depend on the environment, so follow the product instructions.
A railing that frames the space—not the other way around
The project shows that a railing around a pool or patio doesn’t have to be the first thing you notice. With the right choice, the railing becomes a subtle structure that defines the edge and allows pool deck, the water, and the garden to take centre stage. The railing shouldn’t be the star of the show. It should enhance the rest of the outdoor space.
