Frequently asked questions about Velum Plus

Browse our frequently asked questions and answers, or contact one of our specialists, who are happy to help.

The most important factors are size, model, placement, and how much shade you need. The awning should fit the dimensions of your patio, the facade, and how you use the space. A larger awning provides more shade but also puts more strain on fixing, so plan everything together.

The width and projection should cover the part of the patio where you need shade. Open awning, half cassette, and full cassette provide varying degrees of protection for the fabric and arms. The mounting height, the building’s facade design, and the doors and windows all affect the placement. Choose the fabric and colour to match the facade, and manual crank, a motor, or an automatic system depending on how often awning is used.

The price of a patio awning depends primarily on the width, projection, model, motor, or manual crank, and the selected options. Since every awning is made to measure to your specifications, there is no standard price. Select the model and dimensions in the configurator, and you’ll see the current price for your specific awning right away.

Larger awnings require more fabric and a sturdier construction. An open awning is the simplest option, while half cassette and full cassette provide more protection for the fabric and arms and cost more. A motorised model with remote control costs more than a manual one manual crank, and optional features such as a roof profile, front roller shade, lighting, and automatic sun and wind sensors also affect the final price.

A motor is a good choice if you want to open and close awning quickly and easily, while manual crank is a simpler option that doesn’t require a motor or electricity. Both provide the same amount of shade—the difference lies in convenience, ease of use, and price. Our patio awnings are available with both a motor and manual crank.

The motor is concealed in the roller tube and is controlled by remote, which is convenient for larger awnings and when awning is adjusted several times a day. The motor also allows for automatic operation using sun and wind sensors. Manual crank is reliable and often has a lower purchase price, making it suitable for a smaller awning that is used occasionally.

A typical delivery includes the awning frame with folding arms and roller tube, your chosen fabric, mounting brackets and installation instructions. A motor and remote control or a manual crank are supplied according to the model and specification ordered. The exact components depend on your choices. Each awning is manufactured to your measurements.

Depending on the model, extras may include a protective roof profile, a drop-down front screen for low sun and additional privacy, and LED lighting beneath the awning. Available combinations vary between models. Consider the direction of the sun, exposure to wind and how you use the patio when making your choice.

This depends on the building, its location and the relevant local requirements. An awning is fixed to the exterior of a building and may therefore affect its appearance. Permission may be needed for certain buildings or locations. Check with the relevant local authority before installation.

Whether permission or consent is needed may depend on the building, its location and how the awning changes the appearance of the façade. If you live in a flat or a managed property, also check with the freeholder, landlord or managing agent. Have the awning dimensions, model and a photograph of the façade ready when seeking advice.

Product Information

Heavy-duty open- patio awning, 4x3, 5x3, or made to measure up to 5 metres

Velum Plus is our sturdy open- patio awning, and a reliable choice when you want a awning that covers a large balcony, terrace, or patio. The design is based on four enclosed wires in the arm joints, an extra-reinforced spring assembly, and sturdier arm profiles than Velum Lite—this provides even fabric tension across the entire width, even at long extensions, and a long service life even when awning is used several times a day.

Velum Plus is made to your measurements and supplied ready for installation. Delivery includes the awning frame, fabric, mounting brackets and your selected control system. A partial cassette (roof profile) can be added during configuration. Flexi-adjustment is included as standard. Choose motor and remote control operation or a manual crank. The awning is primarily for solar shading and should not be used in rain, snow or strong winds.

Design Freedom for Large Patios and Terraces

Velum Plus is available in four standard profile colours—white (RAL 9010), grey (RAL 9006), black (RAL 9005 Sable), and anthracite (RAL 7016 M)—and with a wide selection of fabrics from Sandatex, one of Europe’s leading awning fabric manufacturers. This means you can create a solution where awning either blends into the facade or becomes a visible design element. Since the width is manufactured exactly to order, awning fits perfectly right away, without you having to compromise on standard sizes.

Velum Plus is our most popular large patio awning – common size combinations are 4×3 metres (covers about 12 m² of patio space), 5×3 metres (about 15 m²), and 5×3.5 metres (about 17.5 m²).

  • Custom width: Manufactured in the desired width up to 500 cm.
  • Large coverage: Arm lengths up to 350 cm for a shaded area of up to approximately 17.5 m².
  • Two control options: Motor with remote control—or manual manual crank.
  • Heavy-Duty folding arm: Four encapsulated wires and an extra-reinforced spring assembly for perfect fabric tension even at full extension.
  • Stronger arm profiles: More robust profiles than Velum Lite for improved stability under wind loads.
  • High-quality fabric: 100% acrylic fibre with Teflon impregnation from Sandatex (min. 300 g/m²).
  • Four profile colours: White (RAL 9010), grey (RAL 9006), black (RAL 9005 Sable), and anthracite (RAL 7016 M).
  • Flexi-adjustment as standard: Stepless adjustment of the tilt angle to follow the sun's angle.

Please note that accessories such as the partial cassette (roof profile) must be selected separately during configuration.

Common size combinations

  • Patio awning 4×3 metres – for a typical backyard with a dining area for 6 people.
  • Patio awning 5×3 metres – for large balconies with a dining area and a lounge area.
  • Patio awning 5 × 3.5 metres – maximum shaded area of up to 17.5 m².
  • Patio awning 4 metres or 5 metres wide —both size combinations are custom-made.

Common Applications

  • Large balcony or terrace – covers a large portion of the balcony’s front with a patio awning up to 5 metres wide.
  • A patio at a house with a long awning projection —with a span of up to 350 cm—ensure that even a deep patio is completely shaded.
  • Outdoor seating area, restaurant, or café —a sturdy design built to withstand daily use.
  • Hotels and offices – discreet sun protection for large south- and west-facing glass surfaces.

Installation

How to install the Velum Plus patio awning

Velum Plus is designed to be mounted on both walls and ceilings using special brackets. Due to the awning's weight and length, we always recommend that at least two people be present during installation.

Installation follows a clear step-by-step process:

  1. Measure and mark the mounting points on the wall or ceiling based on the awning's width and the distance between the brackets.
  2. Drill holes and secure the brackets to the surface using the correct type of fixing.
  3. Lift the awning into the brackets and secure it as described in the installation instructions.
  4. Connect the motor or manual crank, adjust the awning angle (at least 15 degrees is recommended for water drainage), and test-run awning through the entire motion cycle. Note that the fabric should always be rolled up on the top side of the awning tube.

Please note that if you choose a motorised awning, all electrical installation and connection to the power grid must be performed exclusively by a licensed electrical contractor.

Fixings to suit your project

Velum Plus can be mounted on a variety of surfaces. Choose fixing depending on where the awning will be installed:

  • Wall mounting on brick or rendered masonry – an expansion bolt or chemical anchor for a secure fixing in a load-bearing substrate.
  • Wall mounting on timber – a coach screw or an appropriately sized timber screw fixed directly into a stud or load-bearing timber frame.
  • Ceiling Mount – The ceiling bracket is fixed to the floor structure or load-bearing roof structure.

Quality & Safety

Certified quality – built for large outdoor spaces in the Nordic climate

Velum Plus is designed to withstand larger outdoor spaces and harsher weather conditions. The frame is made of extruded and powder-coated aluminium that won’t rust or flake, and the fabric is from Sandatex, made of 100% acrylic fiber with Teflon impregnation. The extra-reinforced spring assembly and the four encapsulated wires in the arm joints provide even fabric tension tension across the entire width—even with a 500 cm wide awning and a 350 cm projection. The higher spring tension ensures constant pressure on awning fabric regardless of the projection position, so even when you only extend awning slightly, the fabric remains evenly tensioned.

Manufacturing takes place in a controlled environment where each awning undergoes a quality control check before leaving the factory in Sweden. Velum Plus is designed in accordance with EN 13561 (the European standard for awnings). We provide a 3-year warranty on the awning’s frame, powder-coated aluminium profiles, and mechanism. The fabric warranty from Sandatex is 3 years, and the Somfy motor comes with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Maintenance and winter care

The aluminium profiles require no repainting or surface treatment, and the fabric’s Teflon impregnation ensures that the awning maintains a clean, fresh surface. Since the “ awning ” is designed for sun protection, it’s best to retract it during very strong winds, snowfall, or rain. We strongly recommend that the awning be taken down and stored indoors (rolled up or laid flat—never folded) during the winter.

Perform a quick inspection of the fixings and screws 1–2 times a year. For extra safety in windy conditions, you can add wind-securing straps or a partial cassette (roof profile). When the fabric wears out after several years, it can be replaced – contact us for Sandatex fabric of the same quality as the original delivery.

Patio awning planning permission: what to check
