A full-cassette awning encloses both the fabric and arms when retracted, while a semi-cassette mainly protects the fabric from above. The difference is how much of the awning is sheltered from dirt and weather when not in use. It also affects the appearance of the awning on the façade.

A full cassette offers more enclosed protection from rain and dirt, making it well suited to exposed façades. A semi-cassette is simpler and often more affordable, and may work well beneath eaves or in sheltered locations. Both provide shade when extended; the choice depends on protection, appearance and budget.

A patio awning is primarily a sunshade and should be retracted in strong winds, heavy rain, and snow. Depending on the model, fabric, and installation, it can withstand light winds and light rain, but should not be used as permanent weather protection or a roof. The fabric can withstand light rain if the slope is sufficient for the water to run off.

If water collects on the awning or snow accumulates, the load increases significantly, and both the awning and the structure can be damaged. A wind sensor can retract the awning automatically, but you should still retract it yourself before a storm. Let a wet awning dry before leaving it retracted for an extended period.

A patio awning can last for many years if used and maintained properly. Its lifespan is primarily affected by how exposed it is, how often it is used, and how the fabric, frame, and fixings are maintained. A well-maintained frame often lasts longer than the original fabric. Proper care extends its lifespan.

Brush away dirt, pollen, and leaves from the awning as needed; let a damp awning dry before leaving the awning retracted; and check the arms and fixings from time to time. Retract the awning when it is not in use during the winter. If the awning becomes worn or faded after a few years, it can usually be replaced separately, and you can also choose a new colour.

Yes. Our patio awnings are covered by warranties, with different periods for different components. The stated Velum warranty is three years for the frame, mechanism and powder-coated profiles, three years for the fabric and five years of manufacturer’s cover for the motor. Coverage is subject to the applicable warranty terms.

Damage caused by incorrect installation, excessive loads or use in weather conditions outside the awning’s intended operating limits is generally excluded. Retract the awning in strong winds, heavy rain and snow. Keep your order confirmation and contact us with your order number, photographs and a description if you discover a fault.

A motorised patio awning is controlled by remote and, with a compatible motor and control system, can also be controlled via an app or automated using sun and wind sensors. The available functions depend on the motor and control system. A sun sensor can extend awning when the sun is out, and a wind sensor retracts it when the wind reaches a preset level.

The automatic feature is convenient if you’re not always home when the weather changes, but it doesn’t replace the need to use the awning appropriately for the weather. If you want to use an app or a smart home system, the motor and control system must be compatible, so keep that in mind when placing your order.

Patio awnings can provide a large area of shade over tables and seating at restaurants and outdoor dining spaces. The right model depends on the façade width, the required projection and how much of the seating area needs covering. A full-cassette awning protects the fabric and arms when retracted, making it useful on exposed façades.

Motorised operation makes it easier to extend and retract larger awnings several times a day. Fabric choice affects the light beneath the awning and how it complements the premises. Longer façades may need several awnings, so plan the dimensions and positioning as a complete scheme.

Product Information

Full-cassette patio awning – fabric and arms protected year-round

Velum Pro is our fully enclosed cassette model—a patio awning in a cassette where both the fabric and the arms are enclosed in a sealed aluminium cassette when the awning is retracted. This means the fabric is protected from rain, sun, dirt, and pollen even when the awning is not in use, and you have an awning that can remain installed year-round without unnecessary wear and tear. The design is based on the same robust foundation as the Velum Plus—four encapsulated wires in the arm joints and an extra-reinforced spring assembly—but with a fully enclosed cassette made of extruded and powder-coated aluminium.

Velum Pro is a popular choice as a year-round awning for those who want to avoid having to remove the cover before winter. The full cassette is also a common choice for housing co-operatives where all balconies are to have the same patio awning in a cassette—the cassette’s sleek design retains an attractive appearance on the façade and requires minimal maintenance.

The awning is custom-made to your specifications and delivered ready for installation. The delivery includes a cassette with fabric, mounting brackets, and a control unit of your choice. You can choose whether to operate the awning with a motor and remote control or manually using the winding handle, and add wind-resistant struts as needed for extra mechanical reinforcement. As with all awnings, these should be used primarily as sun protection and should not be extended in rain or strong winds.

Sleek design that blends into the façade

The full cassette is designed with a slim profile that frames the façade rather than dominating it. Velum Pro is available in four standard profile colours—white (RAL 9010), grey (RAL 9006), black (RAL 9005 Sable), and anthracite (RAL 7016 M)—and with a wide selection of fabrics from Sandatex, one of Europe’s leading awning fabric manufacturers. Since the width is manufactured exactly to order, the cassette fits perfectly right away, without you having to compromise on standard dimensions.

  • Custom width: Manufactured in the desired width up to 500 cm.
  • Large coverage: Arm lengths up to 350 cm for a shaded area of up to approximately 17.5 m².
  • Fully enclosed cassette: The fabric and arms are fully enclosed when the awning is retracted—providing year-round protection.
  • Adjustable arms (flexible adjustment): The angle can be adjusted between 5 and 50 degrees for optimal sun protection.
  • Two control options: Motor with remote control—or manual manual crank.
  • Heavy-duty folding arm: Four encapsulated wires and an extra-reinforced spring assembly for perfect fabric tension.
  • High-quality fabric: 100% acrylic fibre with Teflon impregnation from Sandatex (min. 300 g/m²).
  • Four profile colours: White (RAL 9010), grey (RAL 9006), black (RAL 9005 Sable), and anthracite (RAL 7016 M).

Since the fully enclosed cassette protects the awning year-round, no separate awning cover is needed.

Common Applications

  • Year-round awning – the fully enclosed cassette protects the awning during the winter, so the awning can remain installed without additional protection.
  • Housing co-operative balconies —a popular choice in housing co-operatives where all balconies are to have the same cassette awning, since the slim full cassette retains a neat appearance on the façade.
  • Patios at private homes – a sleek, streamlined design that blends seamlessly into modern facades.
  • Hotels and public spaces – a closed cassette system provides a clean, maintenance-free exterior in high-profile locations.
  • Outdoor dining area or café – provides a shaded area of up to 17.5 m².
  • Coastal locations – a closed cassette protects the fabric from salt spray and dirt caused by wind and weather.

Installation

How to install a Velum Pro patio awning

Velum Pro is designed to be mounted on both walls and ceilings using specialized brackets. The fully enclosed cassette is heavier than an open awning of the same size, so we always recommend having at least two people on hand during installation—and using lifting aids such as hoists or lifting supports to lift the cassette into place in the brackets.

Installation follows a clear step-by-step process:

  1. Measure and mark the mounting points on the wall or ceiling based on the awning's width and the distance between the brackets.
  2. Drill holes and secure the brackets to the surface using the correct type of fixing.
  3. Lift the cassette into the brackets and secure it in accordance with the installation instructions.
  4. Connect the motor or winding handle, adjust the awning angle (recommended: at least 15 degrees), and test the awning through the entire motion cycle. The fabric should be rolled up onto the top of the roller tube.

Please note that if you choose a motorised awning, all electrical installation and connection to the power grid must be performed exclusively by a licensed electrical contractor.

Fixings to suit your project

Velum Pro can be mounted on a variety of surfaces. Choose the fixings depending on where the awning will be installed:

  • Wall mounting on brick or rendered masonry – an expansion bolt or chemical anchor for a secure fixing in a load-bearing substrate.
  • Wall mounting on timber – a coach screw or an appropriately sized timber screw fixed directly into a stud or load-bearing timber frame.
  • Ceiling Mount – The ceiling bracket is fixed to the floor structure or load-bearing roof structure.

Quality & Safety

Certified quality – year-round protection for the fabric and arms

Velum Pro is designed to withstand the Swedish climate year-round. The enclosed, one-piece cassette, made of extruded and powder-coated aluminium, protects both the fabric and the arms from rain, snow, dirt, and UV radiation when awning is retracted—making it one of the few awning systems that can actually remain up even during the winter without a winter cover. The fabrics are supplied by Sandatex and are made of 100% acrylic fiber with Teflon impregnation, resulting in a fabric that retains its color and texture season after season.

Manufacturing takes place in controlled stages, where each awning undergoes a quality control check before leaving the factory in Sweden. Velum Pro is designed in accordance with EN 13561 (the European standard for awnings). We provide a 3-year warranty on the awning’s frame, mechanism, and powder-coated aluminium profiles. The fabric warranty from Sandatex is 3 years, and the Somfy motor comes with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. If necessary, add wind-resistant struts in particularly exposed locations for extra mechanical strength.

Low-maintenance outdoor aluminium fencing

The fully enclosed cassette requires minimal maintenance—the fabric is protected for most of the year and doesn’t need to be cleaned as often as on an open awning. The aluminium profiles don’t require repainting. However, for the absolute best lifespan, we still recommend that you remove the awning’s front edge (the valance) during the winter and store it indoors, regardless of the model. At the change of seasons, it’s otherwise sufficient to retract the awning during strong winds, snowfall, or rain to keep the structure in top condition. When the fabric wears out after several years, it can be replaced—contact us for Sandatex fabric of the same quality as the original delivery.
