Stairwell railing that brings light and a sense of space
This project demonstrates how a frameless glass balustrade can provide a modern look while also serving as a barrier for an indoor staircase. The railing runs around an open staircase on the upper floor and consists of a low, discreet aluminium profile at floor level and clear, laminated glass panels that allow light from the room’s large windows to pass through.
The light timber top rail gives the balustrade a natural, soft impression and works with the floor. The result is a glass balustrade that provides security without losing the open feel.
What characterises an indoor glass balustrade with a good balance between style and function?
A good indoor glass balustrade combines a pared-back look with a design tailored to the location. In this project, the solution consists of four parts.
- Discreet base channel
- A low, floor-level aluminium profile holds the glass in place withou posts s and is barely visible in the room.
- Done laminated safety glass
- The glass lets daylight through. Laminated glass is held together by an interlayer if it breaks.
- Top rail in light wood
- The timber finishes off the top of the railing and matches the floor, creating a softer look than a metal finish.
- Suitable for many rooms
- This solution works in open-plan rooms with sloped ceilings, as well as near staircases or openings between floors.
How does a frameless glass balustrade provide safety without blocking light or obstructing visibility?
A glass balustrade without posts is a way to create a safe boundary in homes with an open-plan layout. Here it serves as a balustrade around a stairwell opening, where the risk of falling needs to be reduced but where you also want to keep the connection between the floors.
The combination of safety glass, minimalist fixing, and natural materials enhances the room’s architecture. This is especially important in environments where daylight and light flow are part of the room’s identity.
