Sometimes, all it takes is the right colour on the right material to enhance the look of the entire house. In this customer project, a glass balustrade in powder-coated black aluminium frames the balcony of a single-family home. The combination of white and black demonstrates why a cohesive colour scheme often works best.
How do you frame a balcony without making it look heavy?
The property features a white render facade, black window frames, and a classic gable roof – a modern take on the traditional villa. The balcony above the entrance gives the house both balance and a usable outdoor space, but it needed a frame that would both define its boundaries and serve as an architectural element.
The challenge in this type of project is easy to describe but difficult to solve. You want a glass balustrade that is suited to the location and can withstand the weather without much maintenance, but that at the same time blends into the facade’s design rather than becoming a competing element.
Why was the Forma powder-coated n black aluminium chosen?
We chose Forma, our aluminium glass balustrade, where powder-coated aluminium profiles support the glass panels along the entire edge of the balcony. Three choices determine the result.
- Aluminium profiles
- Aluminium and powder-coated finishes are easy to maintain. Normally, simply rinsing the railing with water is enough to keep the surface looking good. Follow the product’s care instructions.
- Black colour
- The profiles and posts are powder-coated in black to match the house’s black window frames and metal trim. The railing picks up on the facade’s existing dark elements and reinforces them as a unifying theme.
- Toughened and laminated glass
- Laminated safety glass is held together by an intermediate layer in case it breaks, so that the shards remain in place. At the same time, the glass retains its transparency.
Why does a black aluminium glass balustrade work well against a white facade?
Black and white is nothing new, but it works for a specific reason. On a white, stuccoed house, the details are created almost entirely through contrast. Window frames, gutters, soffits, and metal trim in dark shades serve as the house’s outline. When you add a balcony balustrade in the same shade of black, you continue that outline rather than introducing a new colour that risks competing for attention.
Powder coating is important in this context. A powder-coated surface is typically durable and requires less maintenance than a painted iron or steel surface, which helps the house maintain its overall visual appeal over time.
What should you consider when planning your own glass balustrade for your balcony?
What makes this project representative is the principle behind the choices, not the dimensions or materials. Three questions determine almost the entire outcome when you’re planning a balcony railing.
Three questions to answer first
-
What colours does the house already have?
With powder coating in any colour you choose, you can match the railing to your window frames and facade details instead of having to guess.
-
What does the facade look like behind the balustrade?
Slim aluminium profiles in a colour that echoes the building’s design blend seamlessly into the overall look. Bold or conflicting lines compete with the facade.
-
What is drop height?
Drop height determines the height of the railing, and thus both the applicable requirements and how heavy the railing appears visually.
What is the process from concept to final installation?
The process consists of three steps, from measurement to installation.
- Configurator
- You can enter the balcony's dimensions in our 3D configurator and watch the price update as you make changes.
- Custom manufacturing
- The kit is made to your measurements, with profiles cut to the correct length, glass made to the exact opening and pre-drilled fixings.
- Installation
- The fixing is adapted to the substrate, for example top fixing to a concrete slab, side fixing to a timber edge beam or fixing to a steel beam. Personalised assembly instructions and video guides come with your order. For larger or more complex installations, it is a good idea to hire a professional.
A simple touch that enhances the entire house
The project demonstrates how a well-balanced solution can transform the overall impression of a property. Forma in powder-coated black aluminium is not a complicated product, but every choice – material, colour, and glass – works in harmony. The railing is not the end product. It is the frame around the house.
