A stainless steel wire balustrade can give a pool area an open, modern frame, especially when the view over the water is an important part of the character of the place. In this customer project, slim posts and horizontal wires create a clear line towards the landscape without forming a dense screen. The result is an airy look in which the pool, the water view and the surrounding patio work together.
Why choose a wire balustrade by a pool with a view?
When a pool overlooks a lake, a bay, or another body of water, the connection to the landscape becomes an important part of the experience. The design of the railing affects how much of the surroundings remain visible from the patio.
For this project, an open design was chosen, featuring stainless posts and horizontal wires. The thin wires form parallel lines that follow the layout of the pool area and create a clear yet visually light boundary.
Unlike a solid fence, wire balustrade allows both light and air to pass through. This creates a minimalist look that complements modern pool settings and clean architectural lines.
A wire balustrade, on the other hand, serves a different safety function than a designated pool barrier or a properly sized fall protection. This difference must be taken into account in the planning process as early as when the railing's location is determined.
How is the stainless steel wire balustrade constructed?
The railing's design is based on a combination of narrow metal profiles and horizontal wires. The open infill allows the water's surface and the landscape to remain visible between posts.
The metallic surface of the stainless steel gives a modern look that works with the straight lines of the pool. The wires reinforce the horizontal direction and create a visual link between the pool area and the view.
- Stainless design
- Posts and wires in stainless steel gives the railing a minimalist, metallic look that fits well in a modern outdoor setting.
- Horizontal wires
- Thin, parallel wires create an open pattern and allow large portions of the view to remain visible.
- Visual demarcation
- The lines of the railing define the layout of the patio without creating a solid barrier to the landscape.
- Pool area with a view of the water
- The railing complements the pool's geometry and the unobstructed view of the surrounding water.
Tenso – wire balustrade at acid-resistant stainless steel
For those who appreciate the open design of stainless ,posts, and wires, we offer our wire balustrade ,Tenso, made of stainless steel. It is a custom-sized balustrade system that combines narrow horizontal wires with round posts.
Tenso is made for outdoor use from acid-resistant stainless steel, grade AISI 316. This steel grade has good resistance to corrosion and is used in environments where the material may be exposed to moisture and other demanding conditions.
Even acid-resistant stainless steel can be affected by salt, chlorides, and other contaminants. The material therefore needs to be cleaned and maintained, especially in exposed environments.
Tenso can be complemented with a top rail depending on the chosen design. A round top rail gives the railing a more defined finishing line and can enhance the interplay with the geometry of the pool area.
Because Tenso has horizontal wires, we recommend the model for ground-level settings where there is no requirement for approved fall protection. It should not be chosen as the only protection to stop children getting to a pool.
Wire railing or glass balustrade – which is best for a pool?
Wire railings and glass balustrades can both create an open look, but they work in different ways. Wires provide an airy structure with distinct horizontal lines, while glass creates a continuous surface that blocks the wind and maintains visibility.
Wire balustrade does not require glass cleaning, but posts, wires, and clamps still need to be cleaned and inspected. Glass railings, on the other hand, require cleaning of the glass surfaces, where, for example, water splashes and limescale can leave visible deposits.
However, the most important difference when it comes to a pool isn’t about maintenance or design. If the railing is to serve as protection against falls or prevent children from reaching the water, the design must be intended for and suitable for that purpose. Horizontal wires pose a particular risk of climbing.
Can a wire balustrade with horizontal wires be used as a pool cover?
A railing with horizontal wires is not a suitable standard solution as a safety barrier around a pool where children need to be prevented from reaching the water. Wires can be used as a foothold and therefore makes it possible to climb the structure.
A pool must be equipped with a safety solution designed to prevent drowning accidents. If there is also a difference in water level, fall protection must be assessed separately. A railing that serves as a visual barrier does not automatically meet any of these safety requirements.
How do you maintain a stainless steel wire balustrade near a pool?
Stainless steel needs to be looked after even when it is used outdoors. Near a pool, moisture, splashes and chemical residues can affect the surface, and in coastal environments salt can also contribute to deposits forming.
Clean posts and wires using methods suitable for stainless steel. Rinse away contaminants as needed, and avoid cleaning products that contain substances that may corrode the material.
Even acid-resistant stainless steel can develop discolouration or surface rust if foreign iron particles become lodged on the surface. Such deposits should be examined and treated using the proper cleaning method. Visible rust should not automatically be dismissed as harmless without first being inspected.
The condition and tension of the cables must also be checked in accordance with the balustrade system’s instructions. If a wire becomes slack, retensioning may be necessary; however, the correct tension should not be determined solely by feeling the wire. Posts, the fixings, and tensioners are affected by the tensile forces of the cables and must function in unison.
An openwork railing that enhances the view of the water
This customer project demonstrates how a stainless steel wire balustrade can contribute to an open and modern aesthetic in a pool setting with a view of the water. The narrow posts and horizontal wires form parallel lines that complement the pool’s shape and allow the landscape to remain an integral part of the experience.
A railing of this type should be installed where its open design is appropriate. When the pool area also requires protection against drowning or falls, these safety needs must be addressed with a structure designed for that purpose. In this way, both the overall visual appearance and safety can be planned based on the site’s actual needs.
