A discreet Vista glass balustrade around an infinity pool, combining clear views with a defined edge.

Published Last updated About 6 pages

A frameless glass balustrade surrounding an infinity pool can create a subtle boundary without obstructing the view of the water. In this customer project, Vista – our glass balustrade without vertical posts – was fixed next to a low plinth. The transparent glass panels follow the clean lines of the pool area and allow the view to extend toward the landscape, while the railing becomes a natural part of the surrounding terrace.

Why choose a frameless glass balustrade around an infinity pool?

An infinity pool is designed to give the impression that the water’s surface extends toward the horizon. This effect is usually created by having the water flow over one or more pool edges and collect in a lower channel. When the pool is located in a scenic spot, the boundary between the water’s surface and the landscape can therefore become an important part of the architectural experience.

A railing with closely spaced balusters or sturdy posts can create distinct visual breaks. With a frameless glass balustrade, the pool area instead gains a more continuous line of sight, since the glass panels lack traditional vertical posts between them.

In this project, the understated design ensures that the pool’s water surface and the surrounding nature remain the focal point. The glass also reflects some of the light and the surroundings, which can enhance the interplay between the pool, the patio, and the landscape.

How is the Vista balustrade at the infinity pool designed?

For the pool area, Vista frameless glass balustrade was chosen, a system in which the glass is anchored without traditional posts between the glass panels. The design gives a pared-back look that suits settings where the view is an important part of the design.

In this customer project, the glass balustrade is installed along the pool area, adjacent to a low base. The base creates a clear transition between the glass and the surrounding surface, while the railing’s fixing is discreetly integrated into the overall design.

What is the difference between frameless, glass balustrade, and glass balustrade, compared to posts at the pool?

Glass railings around pool areas can have different appearances depending on how the glass is installed. A frameless system creates a more continuous glass surface, while railings with aluminium or stainless posts profiles create a more distinct structure between the glass panels.

The choice is influenced by both the architecture of the pool area and the technical specifications of the railing. Glass, fixing, the substrate, and any safety barriers must be designed for the specific application.

Railing solution Visual Expression Things to Keep in Mind
Frameless glass balustrade – Vista Continuous glass surfaces without traditional vertical posts. Provides a subtle division with good visibility. The glass's structure, fixing, and the load-bearing capacity of the substrate must be adapted to the site.
Aluminium glass railing – Forma Glass panels between aluminium posts create a modern look, with posts forming clean lines. The placement of the posts and the balustrade’s fixings need to work with the design of the pool area.
Stainless steel glass balustrade – Prime Glass panels with stainless steel posts give a more distinct metallic character and a classic look. Material quality, cleaning, and fixings must be selected based on the environment and exposure.

For this project, Vista was chosen to create as unobtrusive a visual frame as possible. The absence of vertical posts allows the glass to complement the open feel of the infinity pool and lets the landscape remain an important part of the experience.

How do you install a frameless glass balustrade by a pool?

A frameless glass balustrade requires a fixing that can transfer the loads from the glass to the supporting structure. Depending on the balustrade system and design, this can be achieved, for example, with a bottom profile or other designated fixing components.

At the infinity pool in this project, the glass balustrade has been placed adjacent to a low base. This solution creates a subtle transition to the terrace, but the visible design of the base does not, in and of itself, reveal how the load-bearing fixing is constructed.

If a frameless balustrade is to be fixed next to an existing pool, the condition and load-bearing capacity of the substrate must be checked before the fixing is chosen. A plinth or timber decking may need to be adapted if it is not intended to take the loads the balustrade transfers.

The distance to the pool edge, any differences in level, and the ability to clean and inspect the structure must also be taken into account. This is particularly important in environments where fixings may be exposed to water splashes, moisture, or cleaning agents from the pool area.

What safety requirements must a pool-side glass balustrade meet?

When it comes to a pool, safety must be assessed based on how the area is used and what risks exist. If glass balustrade is located at a change in elevation, it may need to function as fall protection. If it is intended to prevent children from accessing the pool, it must also be part of a safety system designed to prevent drowning accidents.

These are two different functions. A glass balustrade may be designed to withstand loads resulting from a difference in water levels without necessarily being suitable as a complete safety barrier around a pool.

Vista is a frameless system featuring toughened and laminated safety glass. The lamination helps hold the glass panels together if the glass breaks, while the toughening affects the glass’s strength and fracture characteristics. For this particular installation, both the glass and fixing must be selected based on the safety requirements the railing must meet.

How do you care for a frameless glass balustrade by the pool?

A poolside glass balustrade is often exposed to water splashes, moisture, and deposits from the surrounding area. Limescale, dirt, and residues from the pool water can affect the appearance of the glass, making regular cleaning essential to maintain its clarity.

Rinse the glass as needed and use cleaning products suitable for glass and the balustrade’s other materials. Avoid abrasive methods that could damage glass surfaces, profiles or fixings. How often cleaning is needed depends on the properties of the pool water and how exposed the balustrade is.

The fixings must also be checked according to the product instructions. Look out for any damage to the glass, changes at the base or movement in the structure. If anything appears damaged or loose, the balustrade must be assessed before it is used any further.

How does Vista enhance the open feel of the infinity pool?

This customer project demonstrates how a frameless glass balustrade can become part of the pool area’s architecture without dominating the view. With Vista installed adjacent to a low base, the infinity pool is given a discreet frame where the water’s surface, the terrace, and the landscape blend harmoniously.

The transparent glass sections and the absence of vertical posts enhance the sense of openness. When the railing’s design, fixing, and safety features are planned based on the site’s conditions, the glass can contribute to a cohesive whole that accommodates both design and function.
