Made-to-measure vertical awnings for windows, balconies and conservatories

A vertical awning reduces solar heat before it reaches the glazing, helping rooms stay cooler while retaining daylight and views through the fabric. We manufacture made-to-measure awnings for windows, balcony doors, glazed balconies and conservatories. Enter your dimensions in the configurator and see the price immediately.

Certified quality you can trust

All of our balustrades are manufactured at our own factory in Ängelholm, Sweden, which is certified by RISE in accordance with EN 1090-1. This ensures independent quality control, traceable materials, and documented structural strength.

Frequently asked questions about vertical awnings

There is plenty to consider when choosing vertical awnings. Browse our frequently asked questions or contact one of our specialists for advice.

Delivery times vary depending on the product, the options selected and the current production workload. As many balustrades and awnings are made to measure, production time forms part of the overall delivery time. You'll receive an estimated delivery time when placing your order.

For balustrades, delivery times depend on the model, dimensions, glass and options chosen. For awnings, they depend on the model, size, fabric and extras. When your order has been completed and dispatched, you will receive tracking information. Lead times may be longer during busy periods, so order in good time if you have a deadline.

Vertical awnings are available in motorised, solar-powered and integrated-lighting versions. They all work in the same way: the fabric runs vertically in front of the glazing, reducing solar heat gain and glare before sunlight reaches the window. The best option depends on the window dimensions, its location and how you want to operate the awning.

A motorised awning is operated using a remote control or another compatible control system and is suited to locations where a mains connection is readily available. A solar-powered awning does not need to connect to the building's electrical system, which simplifies installation. The version with LED lighting built into the cassette suits balconies and conservatories used in the evening.

A zip-screen is a vertical awning with a zip-edged fabric retained inside the side guide rails. As the awning lowers, the zipped edges run within the channels, helping keep the fabric taut. This provides a more secure fabric guidance system than a conventional screen awning with free side edges.

With a zip-screen system, the fabric stays more evenly tensioned and flutters less in the wind, making it better suited to exposed locations. Zip-screen refers to the side-guidance system rather than a particular fabric type. Wind resistance also depends on the model, dimensions and fixings. Our Sensus vertical awnings use zip technology.

A vertical awning can be fitted to the exterior wall or within a window recess. You can carry out the mechanical installation yourself if you are confident with measuring, drilling and fitting. Check the measurements, fitting space and supporting material before ordering. Made-to-measure manufacturing allows the awning to fit the specified opening.

Allow enough space for the cassette above the opening and the guide rails on both sides, while keeping windows and doors usable. Sensus models are manufactured up to 500 cm wide and 480 cm high. Fixings must suit the façade material and a suitable supporting structure. Two people are recommended when installing larger awnings.

The wind resistance of a vertical awning depends on the model, size, fixings and construction. A zip-screen holds the fabric edges inside the guide rails, helping it remain taut in windy conditions. The Sensus range is specified as wind class 8 for standard wall mounting; check the product documentation for the applicable standard and installation conditions.

Different installation methods and particularly exposed locations can affect the loads on the structure, so always follow the product's wind-resistance rating. Retract the awning if wind speeds are expected to exceed its stated limits, and never allow snow to build up on a lowered awning. Retracting it during extreme weather is also a sensible precaution.

The price of a vertical awning depends mainly on its dimensions, operating system, fabric and the number ordered. As each awning is made to measure, there is no single price for every size. The configurator shows the current price when you select the dimensions and version.

Larger awnings need more materials and fabric, while motorised or solar-powered operation also affects the price. Fabric, colour, model and the number of windows to be shaded all play a part. Configure several awnings together to see the total project price and compare sizes and specifications.

This depends on the building, its location and the relevant local requirements. An awning is fixed to the exterior of a building and may therefore affect its appearance. Permission may be needed for certain buildings or locations. Check with the relevant local authority before installation.

Whether permission or consent is needed may depend on the building, its location and how the awning changes the appearance of the façade. If you live in a flat or a managed property, also check with the freeholder, landlord or managing agent. Have the awning dimensions, model and a photograph of the façade ready when seeking advice.

A patio awning extends out from the building to shade a deck, terrace or patio. A vertical awning moves up and down in front of windows and glazed areas to reduce indoor heat and glare. The choice depends on whether you want shade over an outdoor space or protection for a room.

If you want shade over a sunny patio, a patio awning is usually the natural choice. If a room becomes hot through large windows or glazed doors, a vertical awning may be more suitable while still allowing some visibility through the fabric. Both types can be supplied with motorised operation and remote controls, depending on the model.

Vertical awnings – cooler rooms without losing the view

A vertical awning is mounted outside the window and intercepts sunlight before its heat enters the room. This can make it more effective than internal curtains, Venetian blinds or roller blinds, helping reduce indoor temperatures on sunny days. The fabric has a 5% openness factor, allowing daylight and views to be retained when the awning is lowered while reducing visibility from outside.
We make every vertical awning to measure, using zip-screen technology and a screw-free cassette.

Three options – Sensus Motor, Sensus LED and Sensus Solcell

  • Sensus Motor – standard motorised model with remote control, often chosen for south- and west-facing windows.
  • Sensus LED – the same construction with LED lighting built into the cassette, suitable for balconies and conservatories used in the evening.
  • Sensus Solcell – solar-powered operation without the need to run electrical cables through the façade.

When is a vertical awning suitable?

Vertical awnings are suited to south- and west-facing windows in houses; balconies and glazed balconies in apartment buildings; conservatories and greenhouses; and offices and outdoor dining areas where glare is a problem. Unlike a patio awning, which shades the area outside the building, a vertical awning shades the glazing itself.

How much does a vertical awning cost?

Price depends on width, height, model and fabric. An awning for a single window generally costs less than a wider system covering a balcony door or several windows. Configure multiple awnings at once to see the total price for your project.

Supplied as a complete system

In the configurator, choose the dimensions, profile colour (white, grey, black or anthracite grey), fabric and model. The awning is supplied ready-made with the cassette, fabric, side channels, mounting brackets and controls. Explore the full range under solar shading.
