An indoor staircase is often one of a home’s most defining architectural elements, and the railing is what most influences how the staircase is perceived. A heavy timber railing or one with a solid wall makes the staircase appear visually heavy. A wire balustrade does the opposite: it provides definition and support, while allowing light and the view through the staircase to pass freely.
Why does a wire balustrade work indoors?
An indoor wire balustrade consists of horizontal wires that are stretched between posts made of powder-coated aluminium or stainless steel. Wires form parallel lines from the floor to the handrails. The result is airy: the railing is there, but it doesn’t close off the room.
This is especially noticeable on a staircase if it’s located near a window or in an open-concept space. A wire balustrade lets light through, keeping the staircase or the passageway between floors well-lit. A wall or a solid railing would have cast a shadow.
Which wire balustrades are suitable for an indoor staircase?
We have two main styles that are suitable for indoor staircases. The choice depends mostly on the style of the interior.
- Linea
- Wire in stainless steel with posts and handrails in powder-coated aluminium. You can choose the colour so that the balustrade matches other details in your home. Particularly well suited to modern homes.
- Linea Step
- A completely stainless steel railing. The natural stainless finish is perfect for a home with industrial or minimalist decor, where the character of the metal becomes part of the interior.
What should you consider when planning a stair balustrade?
Start by measuring the staircase, decide on the number of sides, and choose a design that matches your interior.
Three things to do first
-
Measure the staircase's geometry precisely
Measure the rise and run of the steps and count the number of steps. Please send photos so we can see where the steps meet the floor and wall.
-
Decide whether the railing should be installed on one or both sides
Many people choose handrails on both sides so they have support on both sides. Check what applies to your staircase.
-
Select a colour or finish
Choose powder-coated in a coloured finish or stainless steel in a natural finish, depending on the character of the interior.
When is wire balustrade not the right choice for indoor use?
Wire railings suit most modern interiors, but in some settings, other types of railings work better.
- Home with young children
- Horizontal wires can serve as steps. Where children play near the stairs, a combination of wire and a glass panel at the bottom may be a safer choice, or a glass balustrade.
- Classic interior design
- In older homes with a distinctly classic interior design, a timber or wrought iron railing may better reflect the home's character.
